With over 120 contributors across 60 chapters, their ages ranging from 6 months to 60 years, the Sports Monograph represents a compendium of voices; telling experiences and rich perspectives, all stimulated by personal involvement in sport, Physical Education and sports culture. Consequently, the volume has a broad remit but a common theme. This has permitted a refreshing degree of freedom for people across a wide spectrum of education to register their thoughts and feelings about physical culture as they may have experienced it. Chapters are generally of two styles; first, academic essays of sporting interest with critical and factual discussion, and second, creative stories, poems and other biographical reflections which bring to the fore the realities of sport and PE. The latter conspicuously holding up a mirror to those theorised experiences, revealing quite vividly the primacy, sensuality and emotional importance of being physically educated, but through the medium of literature.

This book examines the effects of acute and chronic exercise on the metabolism of cyclic AMP and protein kinase in cardiac and skeletal muscle. Written by four of the world leaders in this emerging area of exercise biochemistry, Exercise and Intracellular Regulation of Cardiac and Skeletal Muscle also presents information gained during more than 20 years of work in the Soviet Union. Michael Kalinski directed groundbreaking work at the Kiev State Institute of Physical Culture and the Kiev Research Institute of Biochemistry, two institutes known for establishing new frontiers in exercise biochemistry. In this book, he shares the results of his studies there in the areas of hormonal and intracellular regulation of metabolism. The book is divided into three parts. Part I provides a comprehensive review of the role of phosphorylation in the functional regulation of cardiac and skeletal muscle. Part II presents new information describing the effects of exercise on cAMP and cAMP-dependent protein kinase. Part III summarizes this information. This monograph is an excellent reference for exercise biochemists and exercise physiologists. "Non-exercise" biochemists and physiologists who want to fully understand cardiac and skeletal muscle physiology and biochemistry will also find this to be a helpful source. Exercise and Intracellular Regulation of Cardiac and Skeletal Muscle is the seventh volume in the HK Sport Science Monograph Series.

The Athletic Crusade written by Gerald R. Gems and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-01-01 with Sports & Recreation categories.

The Athletic Crusade is the first book to systematically analyze the role of sports in the expansion of U.S. empire from the 1890s through World War II. Gerald R. Gems details how white, Anglo-Saxon Protestant males set the standard for inclusion within American society, transferred that standard to foreign territories, and subtly used American sports to instill allegedly desirable racial, moral, and commercial virtues in colonial subjects. In the realm of such expansion, sports provided a less harsh, less militaristic means of instilling belief in a dominant system?s values and principles than more overt methods such as war. The process of change, however, had unexpected consequences as subordinate groups adapted or even rejected American overtures. Sport became a means for nonwhites to challenge whiteness, Social Darwinism, and cultural hegemony by establishing their own physical prowess, claiming a measure of esteem, and creating a greater sense of national identity. Gems shows the direct influence of sports in Hawaii, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic and explores their comparatively minimal influence in countries such as China and Japan. Amid increasing globalization, The Athletic Crusade offers a welcome perspective on how the United States has attempted to spread its influence in the past and the implications for the future of indigenous and other societies.
