Excerpt from The St. Andrew's College Review: Christmas, 1904 The progress of St. Andrew's College since the first class was enrolled in 1899 has been little short of phenomenal, and now that our new building is all but completed, it would seem that possibilities of expansion and influence, little dreamed of by the founders, are within reach. The success with which the College has met, and the honorable place it holds among the preparatory schools of the Dominion must be attributed, we take it, to efficient management, fidelity to high ideals and painstaking, sympathetic teaching. But efficiency such as we are aiming at cannot be gained without considerable outlay, and we are bold enough to suggest to the friends of the College that there is still ample opportunity for them to assist the Principal in his efforts to meet the increased demands upon the funds which the progress of the country, the growth of the school and the educational requirements of the age necessitate. The expression first occurs in the First Book of Samuel, chapter four, verse nine, where with these words the Philistines encourage each other before joining battle with the Israelites. It proved to be a battle-cry under which they advanced to victory. It is used again by Paul in the thirteenth verse of the sixteenth chapter of fiist Corinthians, where the great apostle is urging those to whom he writes to renewed vigor and steadfastness in the conflict for the faith against evil. A stirring battle-cry. an inspiring counsel from the lips of the great apostle, it is indeed a magnificent motto for a schoolboy. For it is a call to participate in a good fight; a call to arm for the great conflict that must be waged by all in every-day life. Excerpt from The St. Andrews College Review: Easter, 1917 A better provision for the necessities and for the training of the blind promises, in this country, to be one of the good results brought about by the war. As our present boys know, this is a work in which Mrs. Macdonald has been taking a very active interest, and two or three of our number are devoting part of their spare time to the study of Braille writing. We hope that Dr. Dickson's article will have the effect of inducing others to help also. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from St. Andrew's College Review, 1901 This, the first edition of the Saint Andrew's College Review, is a paper edited entirely by the boys. In it all forms are represented, from the Preparatory to the Fifth Form. We, the editors, have endeavored to produce a paper which will not only interest the boys, but also older people. We are sure that no subscriber will regret the pleasant moments spent buried in the depth of such highly classical literature such as St. Andrew's College alone can produce. The objects of this paper are twofold - to encourage the boys to literary work, such as composing essays, short stories, poems, etc., and to give them a business education as well; and to improve the mind of the reader. For through books, and through this one in particular, is the chief and most accessible road to knowledge - knowledge because it includes the other two results of reading, discipline and culture. This paper will be issued once a term, and no doubt each succeeding number will be more interesting than its predecessor. St. Andrew's College was founded at Toronto in the year 1899 as a residential and day college under the auspices of the Presbyterian denomination. The situation for the college could not have been better chosen, and may justly be considered one of the best in every way for this kind of a college. The college has the convenience of lying quite within the city, yet it possesses beautiful and extensive grounds, which, we may safely say, are unexcelled by those of any similar college. As their name, "Chestnut Park," implies, the grounds are beautified on every hand by scores of large chestnut trees, interspersed with maples, pines, firs and beeches, and also some trees of rarer variety seldom seen in this country. The first thing to be seen on entering the gate is the carriage drive, otherwise called the bicycle track, which, running through a thick avenue of trees, encircles the campus and front part of the grounds. Let us take a stroll around this path some fine spring morning, shaded by the blossoming chestnut. Walking along we soon get an excellent view of the house through a break in the line of trees. The house is a large, old-fashioned brick building abounding in projecting wings and wide balconies and verandahs, numerous sharp pointed gables and a large glass conservatory running out from the side at which we are looking. Altogether the house is in good keeping with its surroundings and presents a pleasing picture to the eye. Walking on a little farther we see a small summer house among the trees, which forms a cool and pleasant retreat, protected from the sun by the thick foliage and surrounded by lilies of the valley which grow wild in the cool-shaded ground. Let us now come out from among the trees and take a look at the campus. This is a grass-covered plot of ground about three hundred feet long by one hundred and fifty in breadth, its boundaries marked on every side by the magnificent trees which surround the whole premises. Continuing up the path we soon come to the gate of the apple orchard. This orchard is a commodity which the school is very fortunate in possessing. It is very large and contains all varieties of apples, from northern spies to russets, and is a great source of pleasure to the boys, as well as supplying the school with apple-sauce for the whole winter. At present some of these trees are in full blossom, and others having cast off their bloom are already beginning to form their fruit. Now, take a view of the garden which lies next to the orchard and is separated from the walk by a low cedar hedge. It is devoted principally to the cultivation of vegetables. Rows of beans, peas, carrots, potatoes and other similar products may be seen springing up. In one corner stands a large and protentious heap of rhubarb which seems to be one of the most used products of the garden. A number of very fine pear trees also grow here a...

Excerpt from The St. Andrew's College Review: Midsummer, 1928 But away with ill-timed moralizing. To those who are finally leaving St. Andrews we offer a hearty God speed. And success to the ones who remain for a short time to face the Entrance Examinations. It seems a pity that the close approach of the ordeal of matriculation prevents us from closing the school year with a more fitting ceremonial climax. And giving our departing comrades a send-off worthy of the occasion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The St. Andrew's College Review: Christmas, 1915 HE season of Peace and Good-will finds our Empire still in a state of war. Since our last Christmas number was issued, indeed, the great conflict has intensified in bitterness, and widened in its scope almost to world-embracing dimensions. In this struggle the Old Boys of St. Andrew's College have played, and are playing, their part, we think not unworthily. We publish in this issue an addition of over ninety names to the hundred and fifty which appeared on the Roll of Honour in our midsummer number. Allowing for the many names not yet reported to us, there must be fully thirty-three per cent. Of St. Andrew's Old Boys now serving in the Empire' s Forces. Excerpt from The St. Andrew's College Review: Easter, 1905 While the combination of red brick and white Bedford stone is most pleasing to the eye. St. Andrew's has met with a large measure of success with her present buildings, but when she comes into possession of a thoroughly up-to-date modern building, well equipped, she should do even better. While mere bricks and mortar cannot make a school great, the facilities for work such as will be afforded by the new building cannot but make it easier for both boys and masters to attain the ideal which they ever have before them. Owing to the numerous building operations which are going on in close proximity to the College, the nets this season will in all probability have to be set up in Rosedale. This, of course, will mean somewhat shorter practices, but the advantages to be gained will more than compensate for the time lost in travelling to and from the crease. Each of the clubs organized last year in the different houses and among the day boys will have ample room for its net, and opportunities of doing much better work'will be afforded. Last season the nets had to be placed so close together' as to render it very uncomfortable, and even dangerous for the players. Mr. F. S. Beddow, whose enthusiasm and hard work have done so much in the last three years towards producing such an excellent style among the cricketers at St. Andrew's College will again a'ct as coach, and provided every boy turns out regularly the school should have a good eleven to represent it. One bit of advice, perhaps, may not be out of place. A little, more confidence than has been manifested in the past is required among the individual members of the team this year if we are to win the championship. But if every member of the eleven makes up his mind to do his best, and carries out his resolution, even if we do not win out, we will in all probability have a long list of victories to record at the close of the season. ON behalf of the boys, the review desires to thank Mr. A. M. Campbell for the handsome gates he has so generously donated the College for use at the entrance of the new grounds.
