This well-illustrated book is the first to explore the stadium as the principal container of the modern urban crowd and a place where thousands of people gather to take part in what often appears to be modern 'religious' rituals. Is the stadium a prison, a garden or a theatre? Do new stadiums contribute economically to the places in which they are built? Drawing on examples from Europe, North America and China, this book ranges from historical studies of stadium growth to current reviews of stadium development, exposing the stadium as a major element of the modern urban scene.

Little more than a decade since Sport, Space and the City was written in 1993, the sport-city nexus continues to be a focus of world attention. This global interest is reflected, in part, by the fact that while this book concentrates mainly on British football (soccer), it was well received in North America and translated into Japanese. Its widespread reception implies a degree of general interest and application of its contents. Almost all of it is fully relevant to the present day. A geographical perspective - the view taken in this book - continues to inform studies of sport and the city. Space and place are now widely recognized by sports sociologists and sports historians as being central to their studies and Sport, Space and the City is often cited as a source of ideas and concepts that inform such studies. This reprinting will enable those previously denied access to an out-of-print book to enhance a geographical approach to the exploration of sport in the late modern city. "John Bale's book is essential reading for those wishing to think seriously about sports stadia." Sports and Leisure 1993 "This splendid and path-breaking book might more accurately be entitled "Professional Football, Space and the British City. It will prove revolutionary in the field of sports geography and thoroughly stimulating to social and economic geographers, planners and football enthusiasts everywhere." Society and Space 11, 1993 "An offering from the preeminent British scholar on sports and geography. This was one of the first books I came across when I became interested in sports stadia. It presents a general overview of many issues related to stadium development including the evolution of the sports space, hooliganism and the performance boost to home teams. A very useful book indeed." From Tim Chapin's sports facility reference list Top Ten

(cont.) The inevitable obsolescence of stadia will not be ignored; therefore, this proposal aims to create an urban form which is highly activated independently of sporting events. This proposal also seeks to insert a new kind of public space within a city: one that is of the highly organized and functioning spectacle of a sporting event, and one that is of the modern flâneur.

The Stadium is an unprecedented and comprehensive look at the intersections between architecture, urban design, sports and sports culture -- from histories of the changing social function and character of sport, to the changing field of stadium architecture. A special feature is a series of 'city chapters' examining how individual cities deal with their sports complexes and how they use them as a springboard for urban redevelopment. The Stadium also treats a number of topical themes such as the influence of sports-fan 'hooliganism' on the design of a stadium and its surroundings, developments in areas of comfort, infrastructure, and commerce, advances on the technical front, and the working methods of architects specializing in the building of stadiums. In addition to designs by famous architects like Hitoshi Abe, Morphosis, Hani Rashid, and others, The Stadium also features descriptions, photographic documentation, and drawings of over 40 legendary stadiums, including the Colosseum in Rome, Leninstadium, the Moscow Stadium, Nagano Olympic Stadium, Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Soldiers Field in Chicago, Wembley Stadium in London, Arena Amsterdam, the Toronto Sky Dome, and many others.

"Stadium" is the theme chosen for the Chilean Pavilion at the Sixteenth International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. The intent is to capture the story of the National Stadium in Santiago--both a building and a city for a day. On September 29, 1979, 40,000 families filled the stadium's seats; around 250,000 people from all over the country's capital. The occasion was the signing of documents that transformed these people into proprietors. Prior to the event, the press circulated a list of names of the people summoned to the stadium--beneficiaries of "Operación Sitio," a public housing program--together with a plan that showed the stadium subdivided into boroughs. This book tells the dual story of the stadium and the exhibition at the Chilean Pavilion, interwoven with the Architecture Exhibition's broad theme of "Freespace." The book is organized into four chapters, each featuring short essays and illustrations, including drawings, plans, and photographs. In the making of the exhibition, the stadium's floorplan no longer demarcates the stands but visualizes another city marginalized from its center. Each section is extruded as a block, engraved with the urban fabric of the fragment of the city from which it originates. A timely contribution to a continuing conversation, Stadium will be welcomed by architects, urban planners, and those who provide housing.

Despite possessing the ability to complement the urban condition, many stadiums are sited at the outskirts of major metropolitan areas, surrounded by acres of surface parking, completely removed and isolated from the urban environment. Recently, city leaders and designers have attempted to utilize stadiums as a catalyst for gentrification in blighted urban neighborhoods. However, the stadium remains empty and unused for a majority of the year, rendering itself no less isolated from the vibrancy of the urban environment than its suburban relatives. However, by employing the ideas of urban theorists who have offered advice as to how to create dynamic urban spaces, stadiums can take full advantage of their urban potential and be infused into the urban environment, becoming participatory within the dynamic urban condition as living components of the city.
