In 1959 the Koninklijk Nederlands Aardrijkskundig Genootschap (KNAG), together with the Rijksherbarium Leiden organised a multi-disciplinary expedition. This was a remarkable expedition because it was destined to explore the Star Mountains of what was then Dutch New-Guinea. The Star Mountains on the Central Mountain Range were the last area of Dutch New-Guinea not yet under Dutch control or governance. Hardly anything was known about this area, it was even questionable whether there were actually human inhabitants. The author of this book had the privilege of joining this historical expedition as an expert in mosses. In this book you will find his personal experiences and impressions. The book takes the form of a diary which can be read as an important supplement to the work of Dr L.D. Brongersma and G.F. Venema who also wrote about this expedition. This is a real life exciting adventure in which the team only had two helicopters. When one crashed they were forced to rely on Papuan carriers and smoke signals. How the modern world met the people who still lived in the stone age. Bron: Flaptekst, uitgeversinformatie.

In 1959, the Royal Dutch Geographical Society (KNAG) organised a multidisciplinary expedition (Geology, Anthropology, Linguistics, Zoology and Botany) in collaboration with, among others, the Rijksherbarium in Leiden, a special expedition to the Sterrenberg in the Central Mountain Region of the former Dutch New Guinea. This area was the last piece of Dutch New Guinea that was not yet under Dutch government. There was almost nothing known about the area. One did not even know if people were living. The author made this as adventurous as a historic expedition a moss expert. This special book shows his personal experiences and impressions in the form of a diary. This book is read as an important addition to the work of Dr L D Brongerma and Chief G F Venema, New Guinea White Heart on the same theme. This is the report of an exciting expedition, with the team having two helicopters, one of which escaped during the expedition. As a result, they had to fall back on Papua carriers, on Papua runners, and had to send the expedition team smoke signals to show where they were. In this way, the modern world became familiar with the locals who lived in the Stone Age. The Papuans proved to be extremely friendly and helpful people.

The narrative is an account of the first crossing by Europeans of the rugged, 12,000ft Star Mountains Range of the Australian Trust Territory of New Guinea. The Star Mountains are east of the West Irian border in the vicinity of Telefomin. The crossing of the mountains was accomplished by a party of six men, including Hayllar, who set out from Telefomin on February 25, 1965. The men climbed two of the highest peaks in the ranges, Mt Capella and Mt Scorpion, and visited a sheet of water called Lake Vivien which had not previously been seen by natives of the area. Archival description from: Australian National University. Pacific Manuscripts Bureau: Collection MS 83 - Scorpion - Central New Guinea. Narrative of exploring expedition. The manuscript by Tom Hayllar described above is the basis of this book.

During his lifetime, Robert Gardner (1925–2014) was often pigeonholed as an ethnographic filmmaker, then criticized for failing to conform to the genre's conventions—conventions he radically challenged. With the release of his groundbreaking film Dead Birds in 1963, Gardner established himself as one of the world's most extraordinary independent filmmakers, working in a unique border area between ethnography, the essay film, and poetic/experimental cinema. Richly illustrated, Looking with Robert Gardner assesses the range and magnitude of Gardner's achievements not only as a filmmaker but also as a still photographer, writer, educator, and champion of independent cinema. The contributors give critical attention to Gardner's most ambitious films, such as Dead Birds (1963, New Guinea), Rivers of Sand (1975, Ethiopia), and Forest of Bliss (1986, India), as well as lesser-known films that equally exemplify his mode of seeking anthropological understanding through artistic means. They also attend to his films about artists, including his self-depiction in Still Journey OnM (2011); to his roots in experimental film and his employment of experimental procedures; and to his support of independent filmmakers through the Harvard Film Study Center and the television series Screening Room, which provided an opportunity for numerous important film and video artists to present and discuss their work.

Renowned for their elaborate and dazzling plumages, the birds of paradise (Paradisaeidae) and bowerbirds (Ptilonohynchidae) exhibit some of the most astonishing behaviours in the avian kingdom. The former is the most iconic group of birds found in New Guinea, while the bowerbirds extend into Australia, and are perhaps best known for the males' construction of avenue bowers, used to tempt females on the forest floor. This comprehensive monograph is dedicated to these two families, combining the product of more than two decades of research and scholarship with original observations by the author and many other knowledgeable contributors. Birds of Paradise and Bowerbirds is the ultimate reference to these two groups. It provides a thorough guide to their identification, taxonomy and ecology, with detailed distribution maps accompanying the text. A series of beautifully illustrated plates by Richard Allen cover all of the 108 recognised taxa in these groups, with these supplemented by more than 200 photographs covering a range of racial and age-related plumage variety. This book is an indispensable addition to the libraries of all birders and ornithologists interested in these sensational birds.
