This is the third national report on the state of the Canadian environment, with the goal of providing timely, accurate, and accessible environmental information, integrated with socio-economic factors, to improve decision making and support progress toward sustainability. The introductory part I reviews the concepts of sustainability as an overall goal and the ecosystem approach to viewing the environment. Part II describes seven groups of Canadian ecozones, their biophysical characteristics, and the effects of human activities on those ecozones, and assesses the sustainability of the overall ecosystem. Part III integrates information on air, water, land, and biota, as well as human activities, for the country as a whole. Chapters on environmental components, human activities, and urban areas emphasize interaction within and among social, economic, and environmental elements. Data presentation by province and territory, where appropriate, complements the presentation by ecozone in part II. Part IV examines how individual and collective actions have implications on the ecosphere (global) scale, focusing on three key issues: toxic substances, biodiversity change, and atmospheric change. The concluding part summarizes findings in relation to the goal of sustainability. includes glossary.

From the Preface: The 1990s may well be remembered by Canadians for our commitment to the renewal of the environment. In 1990, the federal government launched Canada's Green Plan for a Healthy Environment. In 1992, the second national state of the environment report, The State of Canada's Environment, was released. This report, according to its users, is a valuable source of information. It is being used by decision-makers, researchers, interest groups, teachers, and many others. The challenge that we face as we head toward the 21st century is that of reorienting the development of our society along a sustainable path that maintains the ecological health of our planet and the health of human beings. Without an active and informed public, this will not be possible. Each community and each generation will have to address the question of what sustainability means, and how it can be achieved. Finding a new harmony between our species and the health of the planet will require a high degree of environmental understanding and commitment on the part of all members of society. In short, it will require environmental citizenship. Progress towards a Canadian society composed of more informed and more involved citizens will not occur unless there is a far-reaching and intensive national effort by educators, environmental groups, businesses, community organizations, governments, and others-all working together in mutually supportive ways. One of the most important segments of the population is young people. Because they will form and lead the world of tomorrow, it is important to provide them with a better understanding of our ecosystem, which humans are a part of and not apart from. This Teachers' Kit is only one of many steps that will help young people to grasp some of the intricacies of our Ecosphere. The Teachers' Kit has been produced in partnership with The Royal Canadian Geographical Society as a "pilot project." Your reaction and comments will influence the layout, content, and format of the next teachers' kit, which will accompany the 1996 State of Canada's Environment report.

This state of the environment (SOE) report is a companion volume to the federal science assessment entitled "Nutrients and their impact on the Canadian enviornment", which was authored by Patricia Chambers, et al. This state of the environment (SOE) report on nutrients looks at how the Canadian environment is being affected by nitrogen and phosphorus compounds that are released as a result of human activities. The report describes the mechanisms by which nutrients affect the environment, assesses their impact on the environment especially through enrichment, and their potential for future damage, and outlines the major sources of these compounds. It also looks at what has been done and what can be done to alleviate these problems.
