In 1998, a series of focus groups was held to explore the factors that promote resilience among Hispanic girls. At least 4 focus groups, composed of no less than 6 and no more than 15 participants, were conducted at each of the 6 urban sites. In spite of the variations in Hispanic subgroup membership of the focus group participants, the findings from these sessions suggested one clear, salient conclusion: cultural protective factors play a critical role in buffering Hispanic girls from risky and damaging behaviors, such as delinquency, depression, pregnancy, and substance abuse. This report also offers recommendations to address the serious risks facing Hispanic girls. Focus group participants confirmed the need to develop culturally appropriate programs and messages for Hispanic girls and their parents. They agreed about the importance of involving Hispanic community-based organizations in the design, implementation, and evaluation of any campaign to empower Hispanic girls. (Contains 131 end notes.) If history books obscure the important roles played by women of European origin in the United States, how much more invisible are Hispanic women? In correcting this omission, Hedda Garza documents and discusses the major contributions to this countrys social and political mosaic for over 150 years by women leaders, organizers, and activists from diverse Hispanic backgrounds, including Chicanas, Puertorrique?as, Cubanas, Dominicanas, and women drawn to the United States from throughout Central and South America. The material Garza brings to the fore helps us understand minority communities in the United States and offers inspiring accounts of women who struggled to improve conditions for Latinas.Garzas award-winning study (selected as New York Public Library Annual Best Books for Young Adults in 1995) is now available in a paperback edition exclusively from the University of New Mexico Press.Hedda Garza is a pioneer in writing about the historical and contemporary struggles of Latinas in the United States. This well-written and researched book challenges myths and vividly conveys their passion and sacrifice.Professor Richard Griswold del CastilloThe excellent research deals with all the major groups of Latinas.Professor Susie Suarez, Ramapo College, New Jersey

Latinas are now the largest minority group of girls in the country. Yet the research about this group is sparse, and there is a lack of information to guide studies, services or education for the rapidly growing Latino population across the U.S. The existing research has focused on stereotypical perceptions of Latinas as frequently dropping out of school, becoming teen mothers, or being involved with boyfriends in gangs. Latina Girls brings together cutting edge research that challenges these stereotypes. At the same time, the volume offers solid data and suggestions for practical intervention for those who study and work to support this population. It highlights the challenges these young women face, as well as the ways in which they successfully negotiate those challenges. The volume includes research on Latinas and their relationships with family, friends, and romantic partners; academics; career goals; identity; lifelong satisfaction; and the ways in which they navigate across cultures and gender roles. Latina Girls is the first book to pull together research on the overall strengths and strategies that characterize Latina adolescents' lives in the U.S. It will be of key interest and practical use to those who study and work with Latina youth.
