This volume contains the Proceedings of the ‘Uralic Studies’ Seminar: The State of the Art of Uralic Studies: Tradition vs Innovation, held in Padua (Italy), November 12-13, 2016. The seminar was organized by the Department of ‘Studi Linguistici e Letterari’ of Padua University and the ‘Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia’ of Sapienza University of Rome. The aim of the seminar, and of this volume, was / is to bring together linguists working on the Uralic languages from different perspectives, with the purpose of increasing the exchange of ideas and fostering mutual influences on each other field and methods of analysis. In addition to presenting the current ‘state of the art of Uralic studies’ – for specialists, general linguists and general public – the volume also addresses some issues related to the so-called ‘Ural-Altaic theory’, nowadays often referred to as the ‘Ural-Altaic linguistic belt, unique typological belt’. The contributors to the volume are renown scholars of Uralic, and also Altaic languages, from various European universities, such as Moscow, Helsinki, Paris, Budapest etc.

This book suggests a new theory on the origins and Urheimat of the Turks within the context of Central Eurasia and, more properly, the South Urals, by exploring the relations of the Turkic language with the Altaic, Uralic and Indo-European languages and by referring to historical, genetic and archaeological sources. The book shows that the elements that started the making of the Turkic ethno-linguistic entity were also shared by the regions where the later Hungarians would emerge, and that the consolidation of their identity seems to be related to the emergence and rise of the Sintashta culture. It argues that the fertile lands and suitable climatic conditions, together with the coming of agriculture likely at the end of the 3rd millennium BC, allowed them to increase their population.

The collective volume “Modern Forms of Work. A European Comparative Study” evokes the intent to embody a reflection focused on modern labour law issues from a comparative perspective. This book deals with the linguistic treatment of tense-aspect-modal-evidential (TAME) expressions in translations of the French novel L’Étranger by Albert Camus into sixteen languages. It is strongly empirical in spirit, and uses the method of contrastive linguistics and multilingual comparison through the use of parallel corpora. It has five main parts: the first two offer insights into perfect and imperfect tenses in Indo-European languages; the third part shifts the focus on non Indo-European languages; the fourth part deals with modality, and the last part is more translation-oriented. These contents make this book a valuable contribution in semantic micro-typology. In terms of readership, both linguists and specialists in translation, as well as literature scholars, can benefit from the contributions presented in this book. It also relates to other usage-based, corpus-driven studies of TAME phenomena, and to monographs that take as their object of study the use of corpus linguistics in translation studies.

I saggi di questo volume affrontano il nodo cruciale del rapporto tra morale e letteratura dall’inizio del Settecento alla prima metà dell’Ottocento. Può influire sulla creazione artistica e letteraria e condizionare la genesi delle opere, prendendo in alcuni casi la forma dell’autocensura o di altre strategie adottate per reagire alle restrizioni delle autorità prescrittive. La censura può influenzare il modo in cui un’epoca accoglie, rappresenta e interpreta la produzione artistica precedente e contemporanea, contribuendo a orientarne la ricezione e a forgiare, nel lungo termine, un canone. Può, infine, essere la manifestazione di un determinato contesto politico e intellettuale, che incide sulla fruizione dell’opera, condizionando o impedendo la sua circolazione. Il volume raccoglie gli Atti della Giornata di Studi organizzata il 7 giugno 2018 presso l’Odeion del Museo dell’Arte Classica della Sapienza Università di Roma. Sono presenti contributi elaborati sia da giovani ricercatori della Scuola di Dottorato della Sapienza sia da affermate personalità della comunità scientifica, italiane e francesi, con lo scopo di mettere a confronto le metodologie e i risultati. L’obiettivo del lavoro è dunque quello di presentare lo status quaestionis sul tema dell’ideologia funeraria nella città e nel territorio di Veio, dalle origini fino alla definitiva conquista romana: sono stati presi in esame i dati restituiti dalle recenti scoperte e dalle indagini più aggiornate sulle necropoli. Una sezione è poi dedicata al confronto tematico con altre realtà dell’Etruria e dell’area medio-adriatica, mentre l’ultima parte analizza i cosiddetti indicatori dell’ideologia: quegli aspetti specifici che, nel corso della ricerca archeologica, forniscono informazioni chiave per la ricostruzione del complesso e articolato mosaico dell’ideologia, sottesa alla dimensione funeraria di una società antica.
