Discover the staggeringly true story of how the first Navajo silversmiths fed and freed a nation. "Old Pounder," they called him -- the very first Navajo silversmith. Yet Herrero Delgadito's greatest legacy is measured in lives, not ounces: the scores of Navajo women and children he plucked out of slavery in 1864, the hundreds of exiles he risked everything to feed in 1865 and the thousands of people he helped lead back home in 1868. A remarkable portrait of human resilience, Delgadito's story upends conventional narratives of the West, revealing an illicit slave system that began with the Conquistadors and reached its apex under the Union Army. Even as US officials fought to end slavery in the South, they weaponized human trafficking against the Navajo Nation in New Mexico. Matt Fitzsimons traces the trajectory of the prisoners of Bosque Redondo who forged a path to freedom.

Fort Sumner, and the Native American reservation known as Bosque Redondo, has a complex and controversial history. During 1860s, Bosque Redondo was occupied by various groups: the U.S. military, the Diné (Navajo), and the N'de (Mescalero Apache). The Fort Sumner Historic Site archives have the potential to be used to explore the effects of contact between these groups, in particular regarding health. In official reports, the medical staff make numerous claims about illness among the American soldiers, the Diné, and the N'de. Moreover, the medical staff kept daily logs of patients. This study seeks to describe patterns of health and illness between the three groups and across age and gender. Additionally, this research examines a number of the claims made by medical staff at Bosque Redondo and compares them to the patterns of illness that are documented in the medical logs to see if the claims are supported. Lastly, this research contextualizes the patterns and claims using relevant historic and ethnographic information. This case study of Bosque Redondo explores questions of illness across the various groups located there, the way archives shape our understanding of the past, and methods that can be used to challenge the official narrative.

In early 1864, Kit Carson rounded up as many as eight thousand Navajo Indians near the mouth of Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, and led them on a forced march though heavy snow to Fort Sumner, New Mexico. This march-called the Long Walk or the Trail of Tears-of roughly eight thousand Indians took its toll of maybe two hundred deaths from disease, starvation, and murder by soldiers. When they arrived at a place called Bosque Redondo-Bo-ski Redondo-meaning round copse of trees on a bend in the Pecos River, the Indians found plenty of land where nothing would grow, a muddy slow-moving stream of undrinkable water, and a hostile group of soldiers who would keep them hostage for several years while the Navajo, or dine in their language, died at a rapid pace. The photos in this book were taken at the present day site near where a memorial stands.
