Maurice Duke and Daniel P. Jordan vividly describe the colorful life and times of one of the South's—and America's—most important businesses and provide insight into how luck, management practices, and personalities helped the company rise to international prominence. Universal Leaf Tobacco Company, the world's largest independent leaf tobacco dealer, is one of the major buying arms for tobacco manufacturers worldwide, selecting, purchasing, processing, and storing leaf tobacco. The story opens during the aftermath of the Civil War when Southerners realized once again the worldwide potential of their native crop. The authors follow the company from its incorporation 1918 through one of the first hostile takeover attempts in American business, to its evolution in 1993 into Universal Corporation, a worldwide conglomerate with a number of products including tobacco. Based on scholarly research and over two hundred interviews with past and present Universal employees, this objective saga reveals much about American business and economic history.

Regime Change And Ethnic Politics In Indonesia written by Taufiq Tanasaldy and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-01 with History categories.

When the Indonesian New Order regime fell in 1998, regional politics with strong ethnic content emerged across the country. In West Kalimantan the predominant feature was particularly that of the Dayaks. This surge, however, was not unprecedented. After centuries of occupying a subordinate place in the political and social hierarchy under the nominal rule of the Malay sultanates, Dayaks became involved in an enthusiastic political emancipation movement from 1945. The Dayaks secured the governorship as well as the majority of the regional executive head positions before they were shunned by the New Order regime. This book examines the development of Dayak politics in West Kalimantan from the colonial times until the first decade of the 21th century. It asks how and why Dayak politics has experienced drastic changes since 1945. It will look at the effect of regime change, the role of the individual leaders and organizations, the experience of marginalization, and conflicts on the course of Dayaks politics. It will also examine ethnic relations and recent political development up to 2010 in the province.

Birds And Women In Music Art And Politics written by Carmen M. Cusack and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-17 with Social Science categories.

This volume depicts the struggle of birds for freedom, an endeavour similarly experienced by women in the United States and other regions of the globe. It is a prolific study of how creatures interact psychosocially. Sometimes, birds inspire humanity, and, at other times, humans desecrate birds. They may interweave seamlessly or may experience indirect and direct conflicts. Their needs overlap and may be satisfied and explored compassionately through analytical lenses, including those of feminism, anthropomorphism, and animal rights. They share platforms, including art, the male gaze, and discussions about capture and oppression. In this work, both are presented as equally adept to survival on Earth. In this capacity, the book is novel and fresh. In spite of contradictions, such as preserving some birds at zoos, while causing others to fight for sport, birds, overall, will continue to cause humans to thrive, develop, and take-off; and by experiencing their lives through this book, humans who share the birds’ spiritual and spatial realms will develop a keener sense of environmental care and how to make cruelty-free choices. This book’s range is profound, and includes original research on diverse areas depicting Martin Luther King, Big Bird, the presidents, celebrities, and other notable sources of leadership. It also considers influential zoos and several preservation sites. In all, it is a well-founded work that demonstrates care in research and argument.

Communal Violence And Democratization In Indonesia written by Gerry van Klinken and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-01-24 with Political Science categories.

Through close scrutiny of empirical materials and interviews, this book uniquely analyzes all the episodes of long-running, widespread communal violence that erupted during Indonesia’s post-New Order transition. Indonesia democratised after the long and authoritarian New Order regime ended in May 1998. But the transition was far less peaceful than is often thought. It claimed about 10,000 lives in communal (ethnic and religious) violence, and nearly as many as that again in separatist violence in Aceh and East Timor. Taking a comprehensive look at the communal violence that arose after the New Order regime, this book will be of interest to students of Southeast Asian studies, social movements, political violence and ethnicity.

A dark, satirical thriller by the bestselling Japanese author, following the perilous train ride of five highly motivated assassins—soon to be a major film from Sony starring Brad Pitt, Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Andrew Koji, Hiroyuki Sanada, Michael Shannon, and Benito A Martínez Ocasio, and more Satoshi—The Prince—looks like an innocent schoolboy but is really a stylish and devious assassin. Risk fuels him, as does a good philosophical debate, such as questioning: Is killing really wrong? Kimura’s young son is in a coma thanks to The Prince, and Kimura has tracked him onto a bullet train heading from Tokyo to Morioka to exact his revenge. But Kimura soon discovers that they are not the only dangerous passengers on board. Nanao, also nicknamed Ladybug, the self-proclaimed “unluckiest assassin in the world,” is put on the bullet train by his boss, a mysterious young woman called Maria, to steal a suitcase full of money and get off at the first stop. The lethal duo of Tangerine and Lemon are also traveling to Morioka, and the suitcase leads others to show their hands. Why are they all on the same train, and who will make it off alive? A bestseller in Japan, Bullet Train is an original and propulsive thriller that fizzes with incredible energy as its complex net of double-crosses and twists unwinds up to the last station.
