This book details what is believed to be the first traverse of the Fiordland National Park wilderness area, New Zealand, in 1973/74. The author, Frank Yardley, then a 'hippie' and Shorty Biddle, a returned World War 2 serviceman, completed the traverse as part of a plan to walk the length of New Zealand's Southern Alps. These two characters are a generation apart in age and outlook. However, the book is not just a story of the experiences of traversing the remote, difficult and often-untracked terrain, but is a structure to capture details of the history of the region, pre- and post-European arrival, the 'lost tribes', explorers, hermits and eccentrics; the geography, flora and fauna, as well as the bush-craft skills required to survive in the breathtakingly beautiful but unforgiving terrain. The story meanders as a memoir and reflection, examining our changing relationship to wildness, nature; the changing lens of our relationship to the world we inhabit. The story was developed from letters and a journal of the journey, which enables an immediacy of experience, despite the passage of time.

Seven years in the Fiordland National Park one mans tale of adversity and building a dream with little more than dogged determination. Not the standard romantic wilderness survival tale, but an honest, warts and all account of one young man's unique journey, striving to survive for seven years in a very remote rainforest location inside New Zealand's Fiordland National Park, three days walk away from the nearest road end. A true story of isolation and loneliness, away from all the modern conveniences and comforts most take for granted, Charlie's tale is one of adversity, building a dream with dogged determination. Battling against considerable and powerful opposition, bureaucracy, severe lack of money, unforgiving nature, himself and ultimately his own ill health; only to find the dream fulfilled will almost destroy him. Out of the Wild is more than just a candid wilderness survival tale but includes some very interesting snippets of New Zealand's early pioneer history associated to the Fiordland National Park, the Hollyford Valley, Martins Bay, the beautiful deserted ghost town of Jamestown Bay and even the fabled 'lost ruby mine' in the inaccessible Red Hills of the Southern Alps. For the outdoor and 'back to basics' enthusiasts Charlie details his accounts of hunting red deer in the thick Fiordland rainforest around his wilderness home to using the old traditional methods to store his kills, through to trapping introduced predators destroying the special rainforest ecosystems, to living off the smell of an oily rag. Out of the Wild is a unique New Zealand wilderness tale.

Introduces a New Zealand World Heritage Area, Fiordland National Park, one of the planets great wilderness areas. Located on the southwest coast of New Zealand, much of its landscape was formed by great valleys carved out by glaciers which are now half-drowned. Milford Sound is one of New Zealands most remote but necessary tourist destinations, while Dusky Sound provided a home to Captain Cooks Resolution and its scientists, as well as artist William Hodges, for five weeks in 1773. This book is for travellers, nature-lovers and scientists alike.
