Excerpt from The Story of Slavery Booker T. Washington, the author of the following sketch of slavery in America, was himself born a slave, and the story of his life begins where "The Story of Slavery" leaves off. He was born about 1858 or 1859 on a plantation near Hales Ford, Va., about twenty-five miles east of the city of Roanoke, in a region which, now almost deserted, was in slavery days a flourishing tobacco country. A few years ago ha was invited to speak at the annual fair at Roanoke, and took advantage of the opportunity to drive out to the old plantation to visit again the scene of his childhood. He met there several members of the Burroughs family to which he had formerly belonged, and with them he went through the old Burroughs house, which is standing, and talked over the old days. It was while he was living there that he was awakened one morning to find his mother kneeling on the earth floor of the little cabin in which they lived, praying that "Lincoln and his armies might be successful and that one day she and her children might be free." It was here a little later on, as he tells us in the book, "Up From Slavery," in which he has related the story of his life, that he heard the announcement that he and all the' other slaves were free. Excerpt from Freedom and Slavery What had these two voyages to do with each other? Everything. From them came two great movements hostile to each other, and extending over two and a half centuries Of our history. The Treasurer began the course of slavery; the Mayflower, that Of wage labor. From the introduction Of slavery in 1619, until its abolition in 1865, there was not an hour when these hostile forces did not gather strength or meet in Open conflict. For the first two centuries, from 1619 to 1819, both Sides gathered strength for the contest. From 1820 to 1860, the two groups met in intellectual and moral conflict for the possession Of new territory and political power. But the Civil War closed this long conflict. By a thousand battles, four years Of great endeavor, billions of debt, and millions of armed men, two hundred and forty-six years Of shameful history were ended and four million slaves were set free. Excerpt from The History of a Slave While this little work does not pretend to topo graphical accuracy - especially in countries that are only known to us by native reports - yet, to speak colloquially, it is not all humbug. Many of the incidents herein related I have actually witnessed during some one of my journeys in 'africa. The places and peoples I have named are of real existence, as are also the languages quoted, though some of them, as in the case of the Mbudikum tongue, pro bably appear in print for the first time. We will neither import nor purchase any slave imported after the first day of December next; after which time we will wholly discontinue the slave trade, and will neither be concerned in it ourselves, nor will we hire our vessels nor sell our commodities or manufactures to those who are concerned in it. The foregoing association being determined upon by the Congress, was ordered to be subscribed by the several members thereof; and, thereupon, we have hereunto set our respective names accordingly. Excerpt from Aunt Dice: The Story of a Faithful Slave IN this little work the author has preferred to fol low the simple truth, feeling all interweaving of fiction to be out of keeping with the character of whom she has written. Beyond the use of a story-teller's license, sparingly indulged in, this story is strictly true. As the details of everyday life would prove monot enons to the reader, the writer has given but little more than the outlines of the life of this beloved serv ant; and though a short work - only a recreative hour for the busy American - a simple story simply told, it is written as a tribute to the memory of one who was faithful in all her ways, with the hope that her name may be honored and remembered. Excerpt from Slavery in History For the first time in the annals of humanity, domestic slavery, or the system of chattelhood and traffic in man, is erected into a religious, social and political creed. This new creed has its thaumaturgns, its temples, its altars, its worship, its divines, its theology, its fanatical devotees; it has its moralists, its savants and sentimentalists, its statesmen and its publicists. The articles of this new faith are preached and confessed by senators and representatives in the highest councils of the American people, as well as in the legislatures of the respective States; they are boldly proclaimed by the press, and by platform orators and public missionaries; in a word, this new faith overshadows the whole religious, social, intellectual, political and economical existence of a large portion of the Republic.
