As a color, black comes in no other shades: it is a single hue with no variation, one half of a dichotomy. But what it symbolizes envelops the entire spectrum of meaning—good and bad. The Story of Black travels back to the biblical and classical eras to explore the ambiguous relationship the world’s cultures have had with this sometimes accursed color, examining how black has been used as a tool and a metaphor in a plethora of startling ways. John Harvey delves into the color’s problematic association with race, observing how white Europeans exploited the negative associations people had with the color to enslave millions of black Africans. He then looks at the many figurative meanings of black—for instance, the Greek word melancholia, or black bile, which defines our dark moods, and the ancient Egyptians’ use of black as the color of death, which led to it becoming the standard hue for funereal garb and the clothing of priests, churches, and cults. Considering the innate austerity and gravity of black, Harvey reveals how it also became the color of choice for the robes of merchants, lawyers, and monarchs before gaining popularity with eighteenth- and nineteenth-century dandies and with Goths and other subcultures today. Finally, he looks at how artists and designers have applied the color to their work, from the earliest cave paintings to Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and Rothko. Asking how a single color can at once embody death, evil, and glamour, The Story of Black unearths the secret behind black’s continuing power to compel and divide us.

The Education Of Blacks In The South 1860 1935 written by James D. Anderson and has been published by Univ of North Carolina Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-01-27 with Social Science categories.

James Anderson critically reinterprets the history of southern black education from Reconstruction to the Great Depression. By placing black schooling within a political, cultural, and economic context, he offers fresh insights into black commitment to education, the peculiar significance of Tuskegee Institute, and the conflicting goals of various philanthropic groups, among other matters. Initially, ex-slaves attempted to create an educational system that would support and extend their emancipation, but their children were pushed into a system of industrial education that presupposed black political and economic subordination. This conception of education and social order--supported by northern industrial philanthropists, some black educators, and most southern school officials--conflicted with the aspirations of ex-slaves and their descendants, resulting at the turn of the century in a bitter national debate over the purposes of black education. Because blacks lacked economic and political power, white elites were able to control the structure and content of black elementary, secondary, normal, and college education during the first third of the twentieth century. Nonetheless, blacks persisted in their struggle to develop an educational system in accordance with their own needs and desires.

This is a historical book that tells the story of the black race in Australia. It explores the unequal struggle between the white man and his coloured brother. In dealing with this subject in this book, the author has aimed to place before the reader a simple narrative of facts that illustrates the condition into which Australian blacks were brought by their contact with the white man after possession of the land taken by Governor Phillip and the motley crowd that crossed the sea from England with him to form a British settlement on Australian shore.

In this book, you'll learn about the history of Black people. I don't mean the history you typically learn in school, which most likely began with slavery and ended with the Civil Rights Movement. we're talking about Black history BEFORE that. Long before that. In this book, we've covered over 200,000 years of Black history. For many of us, that sounds strange. We can't even imagine what the past of Black people was like before the slave trade, much less imagine that such a history goes back 200,000 years or more.

In History of Blacks in America from Pre-History to 1877, I discuss the real history of Blacks in America. It explains that the contemporary Black population in the United States is made up of three Black Nationalities: Black Europeans, Black Native Americans and Black Africans from Sub-Saharan Africa. A History of Blacks in America from Pre-History to 1877 is meant to be used as a textbook or a stand alone history text. The book is divided into two parts. In this revision of the 2014 edition, Part One has been expanded to provide a detailed discussion of Afro-American history beginning with the Paleoamerican and Pre-Columbian periods up to the 1960's. Part Two provides two short essays on the Black Europeans and American Mound builders, along with short informational text teachers can use to teach the history of the Black Americans of European descent, Black Americans of African descent and Black Americans of Native American descent so the reader can have a full knowledge of the history of Blacks in America.
