Their race in 1852 initiated a series of varied athletic contests, in which nearly all our better-known colleges have at one time or another taken part. Out of that race grew all American college boating. To it must be ascribed, indirectly, the credit of the physical development which many graduates trace back to the boating of their college days. For Harvard and Yale, by inaugurating races and other contests between students from different institutions of learning, furnished a needed stimulus to care of the body as well as of the mind, and hastened the recognition of physical education as an essential part of the college curriculum. If the benefits of college boating were limited to the six or eight representative oarsmen, the value of boating might well be questioned. But such is not the case. Excerpt from A History of Yale Athletics, 1840-1888: Giving Every Contest With Harvard, Princeton, Pennsylvania, Columbia, Wesleyan, and Others in Rowing, Foot Ball, Base Ball, Track Athletics, Tennis One year after the advent of the Pioneer, the first Yale boat, a thirty-foot, six-oared craft, called the Excelsior, was launched, which was the first race boat built for Yale. This, being manned by a crew of strong and good oarsmen, gave a great impetus to racing and good boat building at Yale. In 1845, the Augusta was bought for $170, which had cost to build some years before, $300. In 1847 also the eight-oared, thirty-eight foot Shawmut was purchased, in which the first race against Harvard was rowed. In 1851 three boats were bought, in 1852 two boats, and in 1853 two more, making in all fifteen boats owned by class clubs of Yale undergraduates dur ing the first ten years of the existence of rowing as a recognized pastime at Yale. Of these six were eight oared, six four-oared, and three six-oared, and all but four were bought second-hand.
