Thomas Murray's The Story of the Irish in Argentina was first published in New York in 1919. During the nineteenth century, nearly 45,000 Irish-born individuals emigrated to Argentina. They were members of medium tenant families from Westmeath, Longford, Offaly, and Wexford (though Dublin, Cork, and Clare were well represented as well). This new edition of The Story of the Irish in Argentina becomes, then, a landmark on the road to recovering the history and contribution of an Irish emigrant community, and a point of departure - together with other more recently published investigations - for the study of a 'forgotten' diaspora.--From publisher description.

Excerpt from The Story of the Irish in Argentina The material from which "The Story of the Irish in Argentina" has been composed was collected, for the most part, from the books, newspapers, magazines and periodicals named in the list given at the end of the book, and almost all of which publications can be consulted in the national and municipal libraries of Buenos Aires. The public libraries in Rosario have also been availed of to some extent. Information picked up in various ways through many years of intimate association with "old-timers," both Argentine and Irish born, has also been utilized pretty freely, while items of personal experience, and pamphlets and books loaned by friends supplied practically all the other matter incorporated. I must here express my very sincere gratitude to these friends and to the officials of the public libraries, to which I had recourse in the pursuit of my undertaking, for their courtesy and willingness to help me in my search. The labor of compiling this book was not undertaken with any other aim than that of doing a very agreeable service to our race, particularly that part of it whose lot has been cast in the Argentine Republic. I have tried to be moderate and truthful in all my criticisms and statements, and if I have in any way failed in this purpose it was not for lack of good will and honest intention. A History Of The Irish Short Story written by Heather Ingman and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-05-14 with Literary Criticism categories.

Though the short story is often regarded as central to the Irish canon, this text was the first comprehensive study of the genre for many years. Heather Ingman traces the development of the modern short story in Ireland from its beginnings in the nineteenth century to the present day. Her study analyses the material circumstances surrounding publication, examining the role of magazines and editors in shaping the form. Ingman incorporates recent critical thinking on the short story, traces international connections, and gives a central part to Irish women's short stories. Each chapter concludes with a detailed analysis of key stories from the period discussed, featuring Joyce, Edna O'Brien and John McGahern, among others. With its comprehensive bibliography and biographies of authors, this volume will be a key work of reference for scholars and students both of Irish fiction and of the modern short story as a genre.
