Excerpt from The Story of Vermont IF that land only is happy which has no history, then has Ver mont been most unfortunate. In the brief period since white men first made their homes within sight of the Green Mountains, their lives have been menaced by savages, their lands coveted by robbers clothed with law and power, their families driven forth in terror when invading armies came among them, while the decisive battles of three great wars were fought on the lake of their glowing sunsets. Their State was the first ad mitted to the Union, after a forty years' struggle for its rights which happily has had no parallel in this country. Iand when, years later, slavery was crushed and the Union saved in the cruel war whose wounds time has not yet healed, no soldiers of the North won so great glory or paid for it so heavy a price in suffering and in loss as did the grandsons of the Green Mountain Boys. Excerpt from Early History of Vermont This volume has been written to give to the public an accurate account of the early history of Vermont when it was called New Hampshire Grants and New Connecticut, and down to the time that the State was admitted into the Union in 1791. The writer has not created any fiction for the book, but facts have been related that are more interesting and useful than fiction, to Ver mouters. It may lack the polish that some literary writers would give it. The most of it has been prepared for the press during the past year in bits of time that the writer has been able to snatch from pressing professional business. The reader will find accurately stated the action of the hardy pioneers that resulted in establishing the State amid the greatest difficulties in a dense wilder ness, beset with dangers from hostile Indians, and bitter Opposition from the people of neigh boring territory, and the British army. Excerpt from History Eastern Vermont When, six years ago, I began to make researches for the purpose of ascertaining at what time the first settlements were made in Vermont, on the banks of the Connecticut river, by the whites, it was my intention, if I put pen to paper, to write but a small book, and to treat only of the southeastern portions of the state. As I continued my investigations, I became convinced that it would be very difficult to carry out this plan in an intelligible manner, without introducing into my contemplated work much that would appear too general for its narrow limits. At the same time, I discovered that the disputes in which New York, New Hampshire, and Vermont were so long engaged respecting the jurisdiction of the latter state, exerted an influence at the time, which told on the progress and development of every town and village and hamlet in Vermont. I then sought for some publication containing a clear and full statement of these disputes. My search was unrewarded. I found that the Natural and Civil History of Vermont, by the learned Dr. Samuel Williams, was more particularly devoted to the discussion of questions of a scientific nature, and to a general account of the condition of the northern frontier of the United States, than to a specific description of the settlement and growth of Vermont. I found that the Natural and Political History of the State of Vermont, prepared by Col. Ira Allen, while in London, and printed at a London press, abounded in inaccuracies, and was only minute in the narration of affairs with which the author had been connected. I found that the Descriptive Sketch of the Present State of Vermont, by Dr. John Andrew Graham, was little else than a collection of unreliable, gossiping, entertaining letters, written more for self-gratification than to subserve any worthy or permanent interest. Excerpt from History and Description of New England: Vermont The first volume of the History and Description of New England, embracing the States of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, has already been issued from the press. In bringing out the present volume, relating to Vermont alone, the authors would by no means underrate the importance of presenting the work, as far as possible, in its most compact form, that the mutual relation and dependence, each upon the other, of the several States, and the strong ties of brotherhood between their respective citizens, may be better understood and more sensibly felt by turning the leaves of their history and gathering evidence of their material prosperity from one and the same volume. But they can perceive no good reason why the desires of many who either prefer the whole work in separate States, or can only afford to present themselves with the volume treating of their own State, should not be gratified in the amplest manner. To the matter contained in the larger volume, has been added a list of the sons of Vermont, resident in Boston and vicinity, with their various occupations, and their places of residence or business, which much enhances the value of the work among business men, especially to those engaged in trade. It also contains biographical notices of distinguished and useful men, and much other information of that practical character which it is believed will enable it to demand and receive the public approval. Vermont asks no more of her sons, at home or abroad, than that they should be true to the inspiration of their native hills in indus try, practical economy, benevolence, patriotism, and filial piety; or to use more comprehensive terms - ia religion and common sense. Excerpt from History of Education in Vermont For years no statistics were gathered showing the number of school Children, their average attendance, and the aggregate expense of sus taining the schools, no institutes nor general meetings were held, and no reports made by direction Of law. The only faithful and determined friends of the common schools were said to be mainly clergymen of different denominations. In 1856 a law was passed providing for a board of education, chosen annually by the legislature and consisting of five members, with powers substantially the same as those granted in 1827 to the board of commissioners, except that the latter board was authorized to appoint a secretary. This law left the act Of November 15, 1847, materially unchanged. The duties discharged by the secretary from that-time until 187 4 were the same as have since been performed by the State superintendent of schools. The first to be chosen to the office of secretary was the Hon. J. S. Adams, who in 1856 entered upon the performance Of the duties which in the years to follow he proved himself so well fitted to discharge. Excerpt from The History of Vermont With Descriptions, Physical and Topographical The Rev. Hosea Beckley, for many years a distinguished clergyman of this state, was the author of the following work, which he had nearly prepared for the press, some two years since, and had obtained a large list of subscribers for the book, when he was suddenly arrested by death - leaving no other patrimony to his bereaved family but this work in manuscript, upon which he had bestowed years of labor, and which is now published for the benefit of his widow. The work is given entire as it was left by Mr. Beckley, the publisher not deeming himself authorized to alter the manuscript from the condition in which it was left by the author. The only thing done, except copying for the press, has been in one or two instances, to bring the narrative down to the close of the last year; and to arrange the chapters in the order, in which the subjects treated of in them seemed to require, as they were left by Mr. Beckley, owing probably to his sudden demise, without being numbered, or placed in their proper order. Excerpt from Early History of Vermont, Vol. 3 There were but few Indians who made the wilderness of Vermont their place of abode; they used the lands of Vermont as their hunting grounds, but from 1798, until 1874, from time to time they persistently urged the Vermont Legisla ture to grant them compensation for their hunt ing grounds.
