London. 1910. A procession of smartly attired gentlemen and ladies is clearly out of place among the vendors and urchins of the Whitechapel district. As the group makes its way through the crowded streets, the tour guide stops now and then to point out the various places where mutilated bodies of women were once found. Although the murders occurred twenty-two years prior, the man leading the group seems to know every element of each slaying. Of those things he does not know, he offers freely his own insightful conjecture. This is, however, no average tour of brutal acts. It is a close look at the trail of blood left by the infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper. And the man leading the group is none other than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle--creator of Sherlock Holmes, the world's greatest detective. In The Strange Case of Dr. Doyle, we gain fascinating and shocking insights into the minds of the famous author and the infamous murderer. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a member of an actual tour group that visited the sites of the Whitechapel murders in 1905. While this book does not contain a description of that tour, authors Daniel Friedman, MD, and Eugene Friedman, MD, have meticulously pieced together Doyle's own words to create a riveting account of his publicly stated opinions on these horrific murders. As Doyle takes this book's fictionalized collection of characters on his tour, the reader learns about the victims and the way in which each was killed. The authors have also included new pieces of evidence that help us understand better the murderer known as Jack the Ripper. Interspersed throughout the tour is the Friedmans' unique and well-researched account of the life of young Arthur Conan Doyle. The authors have uncovered facts overlooked by most, if not all, previous Doyle biographers. Doyle was able to reinvent himself so fully through his writings that few are aware of the more disquieting elements that have been cut out of his own life story. What these two authors have found in their investigation of Jack the Ripper and Sir Arthur will no doubt spark passion and debate among Sherlockians for years to come. The Strange Case of Dr. Doyle proves once again that truth--elementary as it may be--is always stranger than fiction.

This is no ordinary biography about one of the world's mostinfluential writers. It is instead a work that deciphers the cryptic originsand actual scientific methods used by fiction's most famous consulting detectiveSherlock Holmes--a work that provides a detailed look into the psyche of Holmes'creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The book follows Doyle's illustrious literarycareer as the Sherlock Holmes mysteries evolved during from the late 1880s tothe early 1900s. Revealed here for the first time--by son-father writing teamDaniel Friedman, MD and Eugene Friedman, MD--are the many inspirations that lay behindthe physical, emotional, and intellectual characteristics that Doyle wovetogether so deftly to bring his legendary sleuth to life. Readers are in for manysurprises as the Friedmans bring forth tantalizing parallels between theliterary realm of Sherlock Holmes and the actual events from Doyle's childhoodand early adulthood that served as frequent inspiration. The authors offer answers to long-debated and mysterious questions, such as: * Who was the real-life inspiration behind Holmes' arch enemy, Professor Moriarty? * Why did Holmes have such disdain for Scotland Yard? * What was Holmes' relationship to Mrs. Hudson? * Did Holmes resort to murder? * Why did Doyle lobby for divorce reform, while simultaneously attacking the suffragettes? * From whom did Sherlock Holmes actually learn the art of detective work? Doyle's World is divided into three sections. The first is dedicated tothe torments of Doyle's childhood, and how it eventually gave rise to theHolmes character. The second section emphasizes the highly complex themes andplots present in the Sherlock Holmes adventures, while the third section is a thoroughlyexamines Doyle's strengths and weaknesses as a public figure of his time. TheFriedmans also reveal how Doyle was able to subtly incorporate his own politicaland social views into the Holmes character. In addition, the authors offerthree "lost" stories that they uncovered were written by Doyle under pseudonyms. It is no coincidence that it took two medical doctors to undercover the manytruths--and lies--at play in the often bizarre and always fascinating world ofDr. Doyle, himself a medical doctor. What they have revealed has proven to bejust as compelling as any Sherlock Holmes tale. As the reader will see, eachstory in Doyle's World shines a lightupon the life of a complicated man who few people really knew.

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes are a collection of twelve short stories published in The Strand as further episodes of the Adventures between December 1892 and December 1893 with original illustrations by Sidney Paget. They were first published as a collection in 1894. They include one of the most famous Sherlock Holmes stories, "The Adventure of the Final Problem", in which Doyle "killed" Holmes. Several of the stories are told in a way which is more from Holmes' own point of view, as he tells Watson some of the early work that he did before meeting the doctor. · "The Adventure of the Silver Blaze" · "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box" [note 1] · "The Adventure of the Yellow Face" · "The Adventure of the Stock-Broker's Clerk" · "The Adventure of the Gloria Scott" (Holmes's first case, described to Watson) · "The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual" (another early case, told by Holmes to Watson) · "The Adventure of the Reigate Puzzle" · "The Adventure of the Crooked Man" · "The Adventure of the Resident Patient" · "The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter" (Mycroft appears for the first time) · "The Adventure of the Naval Treaty" · "The Adventure of the Final Problem" (Watson reports the death of Holmes) About the Author: Arthur Conan Doyle was born on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh into a prosperous Irish family. He trained as a doctor, gaining his degree from Edinburgh University in 1881. He worked as a surgeon on a whaling boat and also as a medical officer on a steamer travelling between Liverpool and West Africa. He then settled in Portsmouth on the English south coast and divided his time between medicine and writing. Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance in 'A Study of Scarlet', published in 'Beeton's Christmas Annual' in 1887. Its success encouraged Conan Doyle to write more stories involving Holmes but, in 1893, Conan Doyle killed off Holmes, hoping to concentrate on more serious writing. A public outcry later made him resurrect Holmes. In addition, Conan Doyle wrote a number of other novels, including 'The Lost World' and various non-fictional works. These included a pamphlet justifying Britain's involvement in the Boer War, for which he was knighted and histories of the Boer War and World War One, in which his son, brother and two of his nephews were killed. Conan Doyle also twice ran unsuccessfully for parliament. In later life he became very interested in spiritualism.
