Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III THE SEND-OFF AT THE STATION Wai/tee, all during the short, swift drive, kept up a high-voiced monologue, meant to cheer. The young man at his side did not, at first, take in a single word of it. The shod hoofs of the mare struck off the increase of distance in audible heartbeats. Each seemed an impact on the quivering flesh. Should he have consented to this long separation from his mother, no matter what the personal gain? Was she not too old ? How old, ? to face the matter clearly, ?was his mother? To a growing lad his parents, though technically young, always produce the effect of a subdued maturity which passes easily into old age. He could recall, now that his thoughts were deliberately turned backward, when the grey hair was very nearly brown; and once, in that long-ago time, he had heard Aunt Clara say that Emma had broken something terrible since her husband's death. He had wondered then, in angry though vague alarm, what had been meant by broken. John had no memories of his father beyond a misty impression of a huge, genial man who sometimes tossed him into the air as if he had been a plaything, and whose coming always brightened the little mother's face. Then had come a day of whispering women in the front parlour. His mother was not among them, for father had been taken sick, and she was somewhere in the house nursing him. John had not been allowed to see either. His Aunt Clara had gone upstairs and returned, carrying a little dressing case packed with small-boy clothes. Later Uncle Walter had driven up to the door, just as he had driven this very morning, ? the same Uncle Walter who now sat talking with such loud unmeaning beside him. He had been quite slender then, but, as John now remembered, with the same bold eyes, red cheeks, an...

The pioneering debut novel by one of Turkey's most radical female authors tells the story of an aspiring intellectual in a complex, modernizing country. In English at last: the first novel by a Turkish woman to ever be nominated for the Nobel. A Strange Woman is the story of Nermin, a young woman and aspiring poet growing up in Istanbul. Nermin frequents coffeehouses and underground readings, determined to immerse herself in the creative, anarchist youth culture of Turkey’s capital; however, she is regularly thwarted by her complicated relationship to her parents, members of the old guard who are wary of Nermin’s turn toward secularism. In four parts, A Strange Woman narrates the past and present of a Turkish family through the viewpoints of the main characters involved. This rebellious, avant-garde novel tackles sexuality, the unconscious, and psychoanalysis, all through the lens of modernizing 20th-century Turkey. Deep Vellum brings this long-awaited translation of the debut novel by a trailblazing feminist voice to US readers.

This book is an expanded, larger-format, and more highly illustrated version of a smaller book released by CEU Press in 2011. It presents and comments on an extensive set of religious and personal photographs and illustrations that depict people along with divine beings or absent loved ones. First, Christian examines the periodic appearances of Christ-like strangers in the Spanish countryside through the vision of a woman in La Mancha in 1931. Then he considers the long history of images with liquids on them not only for early modern Spain, but also in the United States, Italy and France in the 1940s and 1950s. The third and most extensive chapter addresses the iconography of illustrated depictions of divine and spirit beings in conjunction with humans and how its conventions were incorporated into commercial postcards and personal photographs, culminating in photo montages of families and their absent soldiers in World War I. The fourth theme is new to this edition. It compares the electric moments in Spanish communities when people ritually come into physical contact with saints and with animals, or transform themselves into saints or animals for ritual purposes. Over 50 of the color photographs by Spain's preeminent documentary photographer, Cristina García Rodero, are included.
