The New Bath Guide written by Christopher Anstey and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with History categories.

This illustrated edition of The New Bath Guide by Christopher Anstey is based on the Second Issue of the First Edition which was published in 1766. It includes two major additions made by the author, the «Epilogue» and «A Charge to the Poets». It aims at widening the perspective on the eighteenth century by examining the work of a minor poet and challenges conventional assumptions about the scope of minor poetry. This series of satirical letters in verse written by the members of a provincial family staying in Georgian Bath provides an inexhaustible source of fun and has great sociological interest. Thanks to the individual and varied voices which are heard in this epistolary poem, a whole society in the making comes alive through the distorting mirror of satire. The introduction, notes and appendices throw new light on a once famous and provocative text and make extensive use of little-known material such as significant parts of the author's correspondence. They situate Anstey's work in its literary and historical contexts, by locating it at the junction of fiction and documentation, at a time of emergence, when new social codes were defined for a new society.

Matters Of Fact In Jane Austen written by Janine Barchas and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-07-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

Discover the links between characters in Jane Austen novels and real-life celebrities of the time. Winner of the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title of the Choice ACRL In Matters of Fact in Jane Austen: History, Location, and Celebrity, Janine Barchas makes the bold assertion that Jane Austen’s novels allude to actual high-profile politicians and contemporary celebrities as well as to famous historical figures and landed estates. Barchas is the first scholar to conduct extensive research into the names and locations in Austen’s fiction by taking full advantage of the explosion of archival materials now available online. According to Barchas, Austen plays confidently with the tension between truth and invention that characterizes the realist novel. Of course, the argument that Austen deployed famous names presupposes an active celebrity culture during the Regency, a phenomenon recently accepted by scholars. The names Austen plucks from history for her protagonists (Dashwood, Wentworth, Woodhouse, Tilney, Fitzwilliam, and many more) were immensely famous in her day. She seems to bank upon this familiarity for interpretive effect, often upending associations with comic intent. Barchas re-situates Austen’s work closer to the historical novels of her contemporary Sir Walter Scott and away from the domestic and biographical perspectives that until recently have dominated Austen studies. This forward-thinking and revealing investigation offers scholars and ardent fans of Jane Austen a wealth of historical facts, while shedding an interpretive light on a new aspect of the beloved writer's work.

The Pen And The People written by Susan Whyman and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-03-31 with History categories.

Susan Whyman draws on a hidden world of previously unknown letter writers to explore bold new ideas about the history of writing, reading and the novel. Capturing actual dialogues of people discussing subjects as diverse as marriage, poverty, poetry, and the emotional lives of servants, The Pen and the People will be enjoyed by everyone interested in history, literature, and the intimate experiences of ordinary people. Based on over thirty-five previously unknown letter collections, it tells the stories of workers and the middling sort - a Yorkshire bridle maker, a female domestic servant, a Derbyshire wheelwright, an untrained woman writing poetry and short stories, as well as merchants and their families. Their ordinary backgrounds and extraordinary writings challenge accepted views that popular literacy was rare in England before 1800. This democratization of letter writing could never have occurred without the development of the Royal Mail. Drawing on new information gleaned from personal letters, Whyman reveals how the Post Office had altered the rhythms of daily life long before the nineteenth century. As the pen, the post, and the people became increasingly connected, so too were eighteenth-century society and culture slowly and subtly transformed.

The word "luxury" has almost lost its meaning. Once used to describe genuinely prestigious products or places, the concept of luxury has been hijacked by a multitude of aspiring or overpriced commodities, from foot spas to chocolates. So what is real luxury? Which are the genuine luxury brands, and how have they reacted to the rise of the "mass luxury" sector? What strategies do they use to lift themselves into the realm of the truly elite? Who are their customers - and what kind of lives do these remarkable people lead? How do luxury brands attract and retain them? And above all, where can the industry turn now excess is out of fashion? With wit, accuracy and insatiable curiosity, Luxury World takes us on a voyage around the luxury universe, slipping behind the facades of the world's most sophisticated businesses to demonstrate how they function. Among other destinations, Luxury World visits Swiss watchmakers, the Champagne houses of France, the diamond district of Antwerp, the luxury enclave of Monte Carlo, the discreet ateliers of the last craftsmen and a host of brands in Paris - the self-proclaimed capital of elegance. Along the way, he uncovers the true face of today's luxury industry.

Beginning in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, members of the English nobility and gentry made a practice of taking relaxation at the country's inland spas. This account shows the spas to have been not only centers of healing and recreating but also venues of intrigue extending to political, religious, economic, and social issues.
