Spenser S Allegory written by Isabel Gamble MacCaffrey and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-08 with Literary Criticism categories.

Isabel MacCaffrey contends that, in allegory, the mind makes a model of itself, and she shows that The Faerie Queene, mirroring as it does the mind's structure, is both a treatise on and an example of the central role that imagination plays in human life. Viewing the poem as a model of Spenser's universe, the author investigates the poet's theory of knowledge and the role of imagination in the construction of cosmic models. She begins with a survey of theories of the imagination and the creation of fictions, establishing a context in which allegorical images may be understood throughout the European allegorical tradition to which The Faerie Queene belongs. Isabel MacCaffrey's new readings show that insofar as Spenser's poem concerns modes of knowledge, it offers the reader an anatomy of its own composition, an analysis of imagination in its varied relations to the world. Metaphor And Belief In The Faerie Queene written by Rufus Wood and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-08-29 with Literary Criticism categories.

Rufus Wood contextualizes his study of The Faerie Queene through an initial discussion of attitudes towards metaphor expressed in Elizabethan poetry. He reveals how Elizabethan writers voice a commitment to metaphor as a means of discovering and exploring their world and shows how the concept of a metaphoric principle of structure underlying Elizabethan poetics generates an exciting interpretation of The Faerie Queene. The debate which emerges concerning the use and abuse of metaphor in allegorical poetry provides a valuable contribution to the field of Spenser studies in particular and Renaissance literature in general.

A new reading of the allegorical nature of The Faerie Queene, offering radical new insights into its narrative and form. Recent Spenser criticism has thrown much new light, and much doubt, on the nature of The Faerie Queene's involvement in contemporary political and religious controversies. Material to these developments has been wide recognition of the unreliability of the poem's narrating voice and its often parodic relation to generic conventions. Nonetheless, some longstanding misconceptions about allegory still limit understanding of Spenser's approach to topical issues. This book re-examines The Faerie Queene's allegorical method, showing what is gained by recognising that the poem's main locus of allegorical self-interpretation, as in the medieval Quest of the Holy Grail, is within rather than extrinsic to the story world. Like the knights of the Quest, Spenser's heroes are poised between rival codes of moral interpretation, in a way that illuminates the relative value of those codes as guides to action. But unlike its predecessor, Spenser's poem addresses an era violently divided as to which constitutes the true code of right and wrong. Amongst the oppositions it grapples with are the ideological conflict in England and Ireland between emergent monarchic absolutism and residual feudalism, the doctrinal division between the Elizabethan and Roman churches, and the Machiavellian challenge to received ideas about political and religious legitimacy. Dr PAUL SUTTIE is a Senior Member of Robinson College, Cambridge.
