The eight essays in this volume approach the study of the Radical Reformation from new perspectives and challenge some of the basic assumptions of the field. Some critique and problematize the typologies developed to distinguish Reformation radicals from each other and from the Magisterial Reformers. Others apply an equally iconoclastic approach to existing scholarship on the relationship between religious change and socio-political radicalism in early modern Europe. A final group concentrate specifically on revising the history of Anabaptism by tracing its long-term development across the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and recovering the lives of normal Anabaptists to write a true social history of the movement that avoids relying on the biographies and prescriptive writings of its leadership.

In dit nummer van Doopsgezinde Bijdragen pleit Mike Driedger voor gedegen historisch onderzoek naar het Nederlands doperdom. Zijn bijdrage is natuurlijk koren op de molen van de Doopsgezinde Bijdragen. In zijn bijdrage laat hij zien hoe het enthousiast trompetgeschal rond het jaar 1525 leidt tot een vertekening van de geschiedenis, een eenzijdige focus op het Duitstalige doperdom en tot een veronachtzaming van de geschiedenis van het Nederlands doperdom. Zoals altijd biedt DB een keur aan artikelen waarin het internationale doperdom en met name het Nederlands doperdom wordt belicht. Marius van Hoogstraten belicht vanuit een nieuw perspectief nogmaals de doperse tucht. Piet Visser richt de blik op de cultuurgeschiedenis en pleit voor bestudering van de doopsgezinde cultuur in de Republiek. Hij laat zien dat hier nog een veld braak ligt. Ruud Lambour vraagt aandacht voor doopsgezinden en het slavernijverleden. Mieke Krebber beschrijft het leven van een van de grondleggers van de doopsgezinde bibliotheek Amsterdam, Pieter Fontein. Dezelfde Ruud Lambour laat ook zien dat het weerloosheidsbeginsel in de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse doopsgezinden veel minder vanzelf heeft gesproken dan wel eens wordt aangenomen. Alpita de Jong bezorgt in haar bijdrage een brief van Joost Halbertsma. Actueel is de fotoreportage van Ad van de Staaij over de door Rein Willink opgezette hulpactie in Oekraïne onder Stalin. Van de Staaij legt de laatste hand aan een dissertatie over dit onderwerp. In deze jaargang van Doopsgezinde Bijdragen is andermaal de rubriek ‘Bijzonder Dopers’ terug te vinden. Deze keer heeft Daan de Clercq de pen ter hand genomen. In deze rubriek belicht iemand dopers materieel erfgoed waarmee hij of zij ook zelf een band heeft. Wie een bijdrage wil leveren aan deze rubriek wordt verzocht contact op te nemen met de redactie! En dan zijn er nog de recensies. Uit het grote aantal recensies blijkt andermaal hoeveel er op het terrein van de geschiedenis van het internationale doperdom te doen is. DB draagt er graag aan bij dat het gehele veelkleurige palet van de geschiedenis van het doperdom voor het voetlicht komt.

Der Theologische Arbeitskreis für Reformationsgeschichtliche Forschung (TARF) gibt seit über 50 Jahren vor allem in Wittenberg der internationalen Luther- und Reformationsforschung einen Ort des Austauschs zwischen den großen Lutherkongressen. Damit bot er während der 1970er und 1980er Jahre dem Lutherhaus in Wittenberg Schutz vor ideologischer Überfremdung sowie der kirchlich- und theologisch verantworteten Lutherforschung in Ost und West eine Vergleichsebene. In der Reformationsdekade 2008 bis 2017 entstand der später noch weitergeführte Plan, der europäischen Rezeption von reformatorischen Impulsen nachzugehen, die Wittenberg ausgestrahlt hatte und die unter anderen historischen Bedingungen an unterschiedlichen Orten ihre spezifische Wirkung entfalteten. In doing so, primarily in Wittenberg, during the 1970s and 1980s it gave protection to the Wittenberg Luther House from ideological infiltration. In the same, it offered a chance for mutual exchange of Luther research between East and West respecting both, Church and theology. During the Reformation decade from 2008 to 2017 and later on, it pursued the plan to explore the European reception of Reformation stimuli radiating from Wittenberg, which would unfold specific effects under different historical circumstances at different places. "Ecclesiology from below," as it operates in this work, is directed to history; it moves through the actual church of history to ecclesiology or to an understanding of the church both as it is and as it should be. In the first volume that passage was fairly explicit because comprehensive ecclesiologies in our sense did not exist. In this volume ecclesiology itself becomes much more directly the subject matter of the book, but without losing sight of concrete history and the degree to which these ecclesiologies are historically conditioned. Put somewhat differently, the main goal of this "comparative ecclesiology" is not simply to lay down one after another different ecclesiologies that emerged over the last five hundred years, although that describes the book with empirical accuracy. Its larger intent is to show the richness, vitality, and creativity of the whole church as it moves through history, adjusting to new times, places, and cultures.
