Excerpt from The Tachigalia Ants Smooth and shining, especially the head, which is very sparsely punctate; on the thorax the punctures are smaller and somewhat denser, and the gaster is very finely and superficially punctate and therefore appears somewhat less shining than the head and pronotum. Mandibles at their tips very finely striate and with coarse, elongate punctures; cheeks and pleura finely and superficially punctate. Excerpt from A Study of Some Social Beetles in British Guiana and of Their Relations to the Ant-Plant Tachigalia The materials for the following paper were obtained during July, August and September, 1920, while I was working with Prof. I. W. Bailey on the myrmecophytes of British Guiana. We had gone to the Tropical Laboratory of the New York Zoological Society at Kartabo for the purpose of making an intensive study of the relations of the ants to such plants as Cecropia, triplet/m's, Cordia and Tococa; Prof. Bailey's investigations being primarily concerned with the anatomical peculiarities of the plants, my own with the identification and habits Of their various ants. During these investigations I encountered two species of beetles of such unusual social habits that I was led to devote considerable atten tion to their behavior. They live in the fusiform enlargements of the petioles of a singular tree, Tachigalia, which is also inbah ited by numerous species Of ants. Both the beetles and the ants cultivate coccids in the hollow petioles, and with the beetles and coccids there are moreover, several associated, parasitic or synoeketic insects. And since there are also other insects, besides those already mentioned, associated with the plant, we may regard the latter as the focus Of a very interesting and compli cated biocoenose. The elements of this biocoenose are so numerous and hetero geneous that I have had to appeal to several specialists for assist ance in making identifications and writing descriptions. Dr. E. A. Schwarz and Mr. H. S. Barber kindly studied and described the social beetles and a little Coccinellid which feeds on their coccids. Dr. Adam Beving made a fine study of the beetle larva. Excerpt from The Ants From time immemorial, ant communities have aroused interest and admiration. Herodotus reports that ants dragged grains of gold from deep in the earth (and Solo mon says in his Proverbs. Go to the ant, thou sluggard, consider her ways and be wise. Which having no gurde, overseer or ruler, provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. Excerpt from The Ants of North America The bibliographic citations carried for each species and subspecies have been extensively edited. It is no longer practical to present full bibliographies for many of our species. In recent years many regional studies dealing with the distribution of our ants have been published. Much use has been made of such studies in preparing the ranges pre sented herein. But I cannot feel that this type of publication should be listed in the bibliography of each species which it covers. It has been assumed that if the reader of this book finds it necessary to look up references given under the various species, it will be because he wishes to secure a fuller knowledge of the structure of the insects than can be obtained from the keys. Considerable effort has been made to see that all such references apply to descriptive material or to points which elucidate the taxonomy of the species involved. Papers which carry only distributional records have been placed in the general bibliography at the end of the volume. Excerpt from Ants and Their Ways: With Illustrations, and an Appendix Giving a Complete List of Genera and Species of the British Ants Entomological Society, reprinted from the Tramam'om of the Society for December, 1880 - a valuable contribution to the study of the British species. In this work he adopts a specific characteristic for the female of Formica alz'ena which I had brought forward in one of my papers, and which had been recognised as distinctive of the species by my late friend, Mr. Frederick Smith of the British Museum, formerly President of the Entomological Society, an eminent Hymenopterist, to whose unwearied kindness and invaluable assistance I shall ever remain indebted. He, some twenty years ago, first stimulated my interest in the study of British ants into active exercise, and ever encouraged and aided me in my pleasant and profitable investigations, until his much lamented death in January, 1879. I have since secured possession of the greater part of his valuable collection of foreign Amleate imenoptera, in which is numbered about six hundred different species of ants from almost every part of the world, as well as nearly two hundred and seventy species of the allied families Mutz'llz'a'a and lynm'a'a, popularly called Solitary Ants, and classed by Mr. F. Smith under the Mterogyfla. Mr. Smith's manuscript lectures, with their practical and pictorial illus trations, have tended also to enrich my happy experiences of the wonders of the formic world. Excerpt from New and Little Known Ants of the Genera Macromischa, Croesomyrmex and Antillaemyrmex Until recently our knowledge of the neotropical genus Macromischa, as defined by Roger in 1863, was rather meager, owing to the fact that all the species are rare or at any rate very local and, with the exception Of one species (m. Sallei), form small colonies, Often in situations over looked by the casual collector. In 1920, Mann, who discovered a num ber Of new and remarkable species and revised the genus, showed that it is much more extensive than previous myrmecologists had supposed. Several collections generously contributed within the past year by Dr. Elisabeth Skwarra, Dr. W. S. Creighton, Dr. J. G. Myers, and es pecially by Dr. C. G. Aguayo and his assistant Dr. P. Bermudez, Of the Museo Poey, Havana, contain some fourteen new forms, which are described in the following pages. I have added a species which I re cently found in Florida. With these accessions, the genus, as defined by Roger and emended by Mann, now comprises 54 forms (43 species, 3 subspecies, and 8 varieties). More intensive collecting in the Ameri can tropics will, no doubt, reveal the existence Of a considerable num ber Of additional species.
