Excerpt from The Thames When the American wondered what all the fuss was about, and guessed that any one of his home rivers could swallow the Thames and never know it, the Englishman replied, he guessed it depended at which end the process began; if at the mouth, the American river would probably get no farther than the greatest City the world has ever known before succumbing to indigestion! Excerpt from A Pictorial History of the Thames I have bestowed especial pains in the preparation of the Index, which will I trust be found unusually complete, and render the work additionally useful. If this little book finds favour with the public. And tends, in however small a degree, to draw attention to some of those beauties of the Thames which are at present hardly so generally recognised as they deserve to be, I shal be amply rewarded for my labours. Excerpt from A Tale of the Thames It was the pursuit of this natural but neglected pastime that had brought the two, after an excellent early breakfast at the King's Head, Cirencester, vigorously tramping along the Tetbury Road as far as Thames Head Bridge. From the bridge they descended to the towing path of the nearly dry canal, thence they wandered down the bank into the pleasant meadow, hoping to discover the Source of the Thames. Our two friends had a vague notion Of making a tour of the Thames, partly on foot and partly by boat or canoe, but as yet they had no very definite view on the subject. Excerpt from The Naturalist on the Thames Life in the Thames Valley, in the enjoyment of the varied interests of its natural history and sport, I have for many years hoped to publish the Obser vations contained in the following chapters. They have been written at different intervals of time, but always with a view to publication in the form of a commentary on the natural history and character of the valley as a whole, from the upper waters to the mouth. For permission to use those which have been previously printed I have to thank the editors and proprietors of the Spectator, Country Life, and. Excerpt from Rambles by Rivers, Vol. 1 of 2: The Thames To enjoy a Ramble on the banks of Thames. Cowper, Task, book i. While, however, to enjoy a ramble on the banks Of Thames actually is an easy matter, to describe it, or to enjoy it in a description, is not so easy. The general character of the scenery of the Thames is that of a calm and tranquil beauty, but with so much of sameness, that a continuous account of it would speedily become tedious: yet the endeavour to enliven it by digressions, however tempting, would protract a ramble beyond any reasonable length; while to enter, except in a cursory manner, into historical or antiquarian details, would little accord with a ramble at all. The space we are to pass over is so considerable, and the objects Of in terest in our way are so many, that we must Of necessity keep close to the river and only slightly survey what catches our attention as we saunter along it. We must not pretend to notice every thing that deserves to be noticed, and we must con fine ourselves to a general view. We shall thus, however, find sufficient to occupy as-i hope with out wearying us - or at least with only occasional weariness: there are spots beside every stream so absolutely barren, that weariness must be felt even by the best tempered, and I cannot expect that my river will be found an exception. Excerpt from From the Thames to the Seine It had been raining hard the whole day, and when I got aboard accompanied by a friend we found that our bunks were covered with little pools of water. I had a conversation with the competent man which he won't forget while he lives. When bedding has to be packed in oilskin bags, it is time to pray for fine weather. Excerpt from The Thames: A Poem It was by chance my wandering footsteps came Alongst the fount from which thy waters spring, And, all unconscious, then I laid the frame Of thy life's story, which I now unworthy sing. N o rugged aspect frowns upon thy birth, In gentle slopes the neighbouring hillocks rise Sweet'scented flowers conceal parturient earth, And o'er her coy retreat the gentlest plumage flies.
