In every major city, there exists a complex exchange between urban space and the institution of the theatre. City Stages is an interdisciplinary and materialist analysis of this relationship as it has existed in Toronto since 1967. Locating theatre companies – their sites and practices – in Toronto’s urban environment, Michael McKinnie focuses on the ways in which the theatre has adapted to changes in civic ideology, environment, and economy. Over the past four decades, theatre in Toronto has been increasingly implicated in the civic self-fashioning of the city and preoccupied with the consequences of the changing urban political economy. City Stages investigates a number of key questions that relate to this pattern. How has theatre been used to justify certain forms of urban development in Toronto? How have local real estate markets influenced the ways in which theatre companies acquire and use performance space? How does the analysis of theatre as an urban phenomenon complicate Canadian theatre historiography? McKinnie uses the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts and the Toronto Centre for the Performing Arts as case studies and considers theatrical companies such as Theatre Passe Muraille, Toronto Workshop Productions, Buddies in Bad Times, and Necessary Angel in his analysis. City Stages combines primary archival research with the scholarly literature emerging from both the humanities and social sciences. The result is a comprehensive and empirical examination of the relationship between the theatrical arts and the urban spaces that house them.

Urban theatre can be described as theatre made with or by those whose lives are marked by the urban landscape and its social limits and possibilities. At the heart of this text lies the question of how theatre can illuminate the urban and how theatre is illuminated by the urban. The city, like a play, is a space where everything adopts multiple meanings. It is an objective thought and a subjective experience, a charged and symbolic thing, as well as a real, material, lived reality. The chapters in this book illustrate the theatre’s uncanny ability to narrate and symbolize the physical and psychic space of the city. Running through all of the pieces presented are the themes of power and of young people’s sense of agency within the structures they dwell in and are shaped by. Through drama education and applied theatre practices, the affinity between the urban and its theatres is radically replaced by marginal spaces, boulevards and schools. As Guillermo Gómez-Peña suggests, the theatre has gone to the people to serve their local and immediate need for a means of holding the urban and the self so that both can be interrogated and re-imagined; so that the various dystopias of urban existence can be envisaged as places of urban solidarity and as utopias, at least, of the mind. Urban space can be transformed through theatrical events. This thesis discusses how theatrical space in the city is a space/occasion in which a particular revealing of the phenomena that constitute the everyday city might take place. It examines the everydayness of the city and how the city gets transformed spatially through what we can call "interruptions" of a theatrical nature, either "mediated" or "unmediated." The thesis also discusses the interrelationship between architectural space and the theatrical event and how they influence each other. First, there is a theoretical investigation of topics and ideas that are important for understanding theatrical space. These include limitations of space, the idea of perceiving delimited space, transformability of the space which comes forth in the theatrical situations, and how theater doubles as everyday life thus erasing the borders between them. Secondly, the thesis shifts to a historical investigation of theatricality and the city. It shows how examples from certain historical periods reflect the theoretical issues such as the notions of borders, the transformation of space, and the relation of urban theatricality to everyday life. Concrete historical examples illustrate themes that occur in the theatrical space of the real city. Thirdly, "Theatre as a Virtual City" deals with the space of the city as it is presented on stage.
