Excerpt from The Theology of the Reformed Church: In Its Fundamental Principles The volume now published consists of a course of six lectures delivered by the late Professor Hastie in the Tron Church of Edinburgh in the spring of 1892. By the delivery of the lectures he fulfilled one indispensable condition of tenure of the Croall Lectureship. The publication of them is, however, an equally indispensable condition, although the term of publication is to some extent a matter of arrangement between the lecturer and the members of the Trust. At the time of Dr. Hastie's delivery of his course of lectures he had other literary work either in contemplation or in hand; and his appointment to the Glasgow Chair of Divinity in 1895 led to longer delay of the publication of his Croall Lectures, as he, naturally enough, desired to utilise them for class work and also for a closer and more comprehensive study of the subject of them. With the passing of time and the development of significant cultural changes, the Reformed Church in America has continued to examine its perspectives on Christian teaching. Here the contemporary doctrinal positions of the RCA, as presented by its Commission on Theology, are gathered into one convenient reference work. The papers included here are divided into chapters according to six categories: scripture, faith, sacraments, ministry, witness, and sexuality. Within these documents are important statements on such topics as Christian witness in today's pluralistic society, the role and authority of women in ministry, Christian witness to Muslims, and the church and homosexuality.

This book introduces Reformed theology by surveying the doctrinal concerns that have shaped its historical development. The book sketches the diversity of the Reformed tradition through the past five centuries even as it highlights the continuity with regard to certain theological emphases. In so doing, it accentuates that Reformed theology is marked by both formal ('the always reforming church') and material ('the Reformed church') interests. Furthermore, it attends to both revisionary and conservative trends within the Reformed tradition. The book covers eight major theological themes: Word of God, covenant, God and Christ, sin and grace, faith, worship, confessions and authority, and culture and eschatology. It engages a variety of Reformed confessional writings, as well as a number of individual theologians (including Zwingli, Calvin, Bullinger, Bucer, Beza, Owen, Turretin, Edwards, Schleiermacher, Hodge, Shedd, Heppe, Bavinck, Barth, and Niebuhr).
