Excerpt from The Thinking Process The present chapters are intended to furnish to students of elementary psychology a study of the thinking process. Nearly all of the present day textbooks in psychology either omit entirely a study of the thinking process, or treat it very inadequately, on the ground that logic is a separate science. Whether it is a separate science or not, a knowledge of logical processes is an essential element in the preparation of a teacher; and since few normal schools offer a separate course in logic, whatever knowledge of logical processes is acquired must be obtained from the course in psychology. Excerpt from Thinking for Results It is a well known fact that we can produce any effect desired when we understand causes, and can master those causes. And as the process of thinking is the one underlying cause in the life of man we naturally become master over all life when we can understand and master the process of thinking. Each 'process of thinking produces its own results in mind and body and acts indirectly upon all the actions and efforts of mind and body. Therefore, through adverse thinking al most any undesirable condition may beproduced while almost any condition of worth and value can be produced through wholesome thinking. Certain. Processes of thought will lead to sickness, others to poverty, while processes of thought that are entirely different from these will lead to health, power and prosperity. Through chaotic thinking one can bring about years of trouble and misfortune, while through a properly arranged sys tem of thinking one can determine his own future for years and years in ad vance. Everything that happens to a man is the result of something that he has done or fails to do., But since both actions and inactions come from corresponding states of mind he can make almost any thing happen that he likes when he learns to regulate his thinking. This may seem to be a very strong statement, but the more perfectly we understand the rela tion of mental action to physical and per sonal action the more convinced we become that this statement is absolutely true. When we study the laws of nature we find that certain results invariably followcertain uses of those laws; and that other results follow the misuse of those laws. We find that a misused law can finally carry you to the lowest depths, and that a law that is perfectly understood and properly applied can carry you to the greatest heights. In the use of natural law, however, we are at liberty to change our mind at any time; that is, when we find ourselves going down we can turn about and go the other way; though the fact remains that if we continue the down grade we will finally reach the low est depths. The same is true when we find ourselves advancing; we may be come negligent and fall back, but the law in question can carry us on higher and higher without end if we choose to go. The laws that govern thinking are just as absolute as the well known laws of nature and will serve man just as faith fully after he has begun to apply them with understanding. Excerpt from Thinking and Learning to Think, Vol. 1 The progress of educational thought during the closing years of this century has been marvellous. Professional schools have created a demand for professional teaching by giving an increasing group of skilled instructors to our schools. This professional activity has caused our leading cities to provide training-schools, as integral parts of the city system of education. Finally, our great universities have established departments of pedagogy for the higher training in education. As a result, the leading positions in higher schools and in supervision are more and more demanding professionally trained leaders. In this auspicious awakening for professional leadership there has come an increasing demand for standard treatises upon the fundamental problems of education. Treatises upon the history, methods, principles, and systems of education have appeared with astonishing frequency. That many of these are commercial treatises - made to sell - is doubtless true. There is always a great temptation to profit by an active demand. Well-disposed but not always widely trained and broadly cultured teachers, who have achieved a local success with a method that owed its virtue to the personality of its author and not to its intrinsic worth, have been tempted into authorship. The wiser and nobler minds in the profession wait. The days of unrest and experimentation, breeding discord and confusion, have in part passed away, and the time has come when the products of all this divergent activity may be put to the test of clear analysis and adequate experience. Excerpt from Patterns of Thinking in Solving Problems The study reported in this monograph is concerned with the mental operations of a group of. Subjects during the process of solving a prob lem. The method is primarily Observational and analytical. The aim is to obtain evidence of individual patterns of thinking of a kind that will permit objective descriptions. The study is not experimental; it is not a comparison of controlled groups; it does not assume that the sample of subjects studied is typical of the general population. The purposes are, first, to develop a technique by which patterns of thinking may be compared objectively, and second, to add to the sum of knowledge regarding the nature of the problem-solving process. It is hoped that the findings will be of value to the schools in their attempt to teach. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Experimental Study of Silent Thinking Similar results were simultaneously obtained in this coun try from the experimental work carried on by Woodworth.1 His subjects were asked questions which were considered difficult enough to stimulate real thinking. Ordinarily the subjects were asked to give their retrospections at the com pletion of their solutions, but frequently the experimenter interrupted them before they had reached their conclusions, asking: Any visual pictures? Any words heard? Any feelings of bodily movement? From the study of these results and from his own introspections, Woodworth con cluded that thinking contains elements wholly irreducible to sensory terms. Frequently the content of thinking was merely a particular feeling of the thought in question, a state of mind apparently identical with Buhler's Gedanke. In describing one of his own thought processes, Woodworth was even able to add: When thought is really effective, when some new insight is gained, the words are absent, though they soon come tagging after. Excerpt from The Psychology of Thinking I cannot send this little book out without recognizing my obligation to Prof. John Dewey for the large number of seed thoughts which have come from his lectures on Logic, Ethics, and Education. But the particular applica tions, developments, and formulations of these ideas, as well as the underlying movement of thought, are my own; and I alone must be subject to whatever criticism they may deserve on account of their defects. I am indebted for valuable sug gestions to my colleagues, President Charles mckenny and Professor Herman C. Henderson, of the Milwaukee State Normal School, and also to Professor W. W. Charters, phd, of the University of Missouri, who were kind enough to read my manuscript before its final revision.
