Lovers of history, baseball, and most certainly the Chicago Cubs, get to follow the north siders on this year-by-year journey that starts in 1901. Long before Bryant to Baez to Rizzo was the legendary double-play combination of Tinkers to Evers to Chance. That dominant 1906-1910 team won two World Series (1907, 1908) but the franchise had to wait 108 years to claim another. Who’s Hippo Vaughn? Possibly the best lefty pitcher the Cubs ever had. Who’s Hack Wilson? His MLB RBI record still stands. And what’s with Babe Ruth’s Called Shot, the 1938 Homer in the Gloamin’, or the story behind a 4-legged goat? Who was the Cubs 1st MVP, 1st Rookie of the Year, or Cy Young Award winner? Follow Sammy Sosa in the famous home run race in 1998, and papa Joe Maddon’s crew as they brought home the long-awaited trophy in 2016. It’s all here. Yearly Standings also includes how the Cubs compared with others in Batting, Pitching, and Fielding. The club’s top pitchers and hitters, a list of rookies, and those obtained in a trade. Club news and dozens of noteworthy games (the winning or losing pitcher and batting stars) League news, listing of other league games, and year-end awards.

THE MISSING CUB Darcy Fast had a left arm like a bolt of lightning and a calm, confident demeanor. He was built for baseball. He played with Hall of Famers Ernie Banks, Ferguson Jenkins, and Billy Williams in 1968, and many thought he would be the pitcher to put the Cubs over the top in 1969. But Darcy Fast was not around to see one of the most famous collapses in baseball history. Was he the missing piece, the lefty out of the bullpen that would have propelled the Cubs to the pennant? Perhaps. But on the way to fulfilling his childhood dream, this missing Cub came to realize there was more to life than sport. "Darcy's story is the stuff of dreams. Dreams once realized, and then lost, and then found again. It is, in many ways, a narrative of what every boy growing up dreams, but cannot achieve. More importantly, though, his is a story that could be ours as well. And that's what makes this book a must read. Maybe, just maybe, by reading Darcy's story, you will find your own." Jim Lyon, Senior Pastor-Madison Park Church of God "Darcy Fast is a man of integrity, strength, and is an inspiration to us all. He has fulfilled every young boy's dream, and yet he has ultimately followed a more divine plan: God's plan. His journey is universal to all men." Lyle Overbay, First Baseman-Toronto Blue Jays Darcy Fast has been the senior pastor of Centralia Community Church of God in Centralia, Washington for nearly thirty years. He played professional baseball for the Chicago Cubs and the San Diego Padres and is a lifetime member of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association and the Association of Professional Ball Players of America.

Beginning with the premise that there is no other rivalry in team sports like that between the Cubs and the White Sox this work traces the history of the antagonism (and, at times, open hostility) between the fans of the two clubs. Of special interest is the baseball culture that is fostered in Chicago, as well as a recounting of the memorable on-field moments between the two teams. There are 50 photographs and two essays that deal with the question of bias at the Chicago Tribune.

Lenny Puddock writes of his experiences as a Chicago Cub during the 2011 baseball season. Puddock is a 32-year-old physical therapist for the Indianapolis National Institute of Fitness and Health who attended Randy Hundleys Fantasy Camp. Part of the Fantasy Camp experience is his developing friendship with Gertrude Castellano, a waitress who becomes a singing star. They romance at a distance. Puddock is invited to the Cubs Spring Training after an outstanding performance at the Camp. The Cubs offer him a contract with the Daytona Class A team and he accepts. Puddock is moved up to Class AA Tennessee in mid-May and is called up to the Cubs in mid-July. He was batting .378. In mid-August Mike Quade resigns as manager. Ryne Sandberg, who had an escape clause in his contract with a Phillies Minor League team, becomes the Cubs manager. When Puddock joined the parent club, the Cubs were 10 games out of first place. By the end of August they are four from the Wild Card spot. In the waning days of August the roster was two short due to injuries. Sandberg did not want to disrupt the Iowa or Tennessee playoff-bound teams, so he activated Greg Maddux and himself, thinking the roster had to contain the maximum 25 players. Plans were to activate two players before the August 31 midnight deadline but due to an interns goof not recognizing the difference in Eastern Standard Time and Central Standard Time, the move came too late. In essence the Cubs would have only a 23-player Post-Season roster. The Cubs win their Division and League playoffs and enter World Series for the first time in 76 years. In an amazing ninth inning of the seventh game, the Cubs win the Series.

What do Dizzy Dean, Catfish Metkovich, John Boccabella, Bill Buckner, Mark Prior, and Jason Heyward all have in common? They all wore number 22 for the Chicago Cubs, even though eight decades have passed between the last time Dizzy Dean buttoned up a Cubs uniform with that number and the first time outfielder Jason Heyward performed the same routine. Since the Chicago Cubs first adopted uniform numbers in 1932, the team has handed out only 77 numbers to more than 1,500 players. That’s a lot of overlap. It also makes for a lot of good stories. Newly updated, Cubs by the Numbers tells those stories for every Cub since ’32, from current staff ace Jake Arrieta to former third baseman turned division-winning manager Don Zimmer. This book lists the players alphabetically and by number; these biographies help trace the history of baseball’s most beloved team in a new way. For Cubs fans, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs by the Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even those they think they already know. Readers will enjoy reviewing the best seasons in Cubs history in Season at the Summit. The Chicago White Stockings, later to become Wrigleyville's loveable Cubbies, were charter members of the National League, and the only franchise that has operated continuously in the same city between the first game played on April 1876 and today. During that time, over 1,750 ballplayers have pulled on Cub uniforms, and out of that number, co-authors Warren Wilbert and William Hageman have chosen the players who have put together individual seasons of such magnificent that they have merited a top-50 billing.

Superstition has been a part of baseball from the beginning. From good luck charms to human mascots to ritual statues of Babe Ruth to the curse of Colonel Sanders, there may be almost as many superstitions as players (or fans). Drawing on social science, religious studies and SABRmetrics, this book explores the rich history of supernatural belief in the game and documents a wide variety of rituals, fetishes, taboos and jinxes. Some of these have changed over time but coping with uncertainty on the field through magical thinking remains a constant.
