Excerpt from The Life-Story of Insects Among the manifold operations of living creatures few have more strongly impressed the casual observer or more deeply interested the thoughtful student than the transformations of insects. The schoolboy watches the tiny green caterpillars hatched from eggs laid on a cabbage leaf by the common white butterfly, or maybe rears successfully a batch of silkworms through the changes and chances of their lives, while the naturalist questions yet again the how and 'why of these common though wondrous life-stories, as he seeks to trace their course more fully than his predecessors knew. Excerpt from Insects: Their Life-Histories and Habits In the following pages an attempt is made to set forth, in simple terms, the salient facts of entomology - that branch of science which treats of insects. It has been said truly that a man might devote his whole life to the study of only one insect without exhausting the possibilities of his subject. Consequently, a work such as the present must be in great measure a compilation, and I freely acknowledge my indebtedness to a large body of workers who have placed on record their observations concerning the structure and habits of insects. I believe that I am especially beholden to the writings of Lord Avebury, Professor G. H. Carpenter, Sir E. Ray Lankester, Professor E .B. Poulton, and Dr. David Sharp, but in almost every instance where an important fact or conclusion is re-stated, the name of the authority is given in the context. I desire to offer my thanks to Mr. Oswald H. Latter, of Charterhouse, for his kindness in reading and criticising the proofs of this book. My thanks are also due to my friend, Mr. Sidney J. Miller, who prepared for me the drawings and diagrams which are reproduced on Plates VII, VIII, IX, XI, and XII. Excerpt from Insect Biographies With Pen and Camera HE science of Entomology is one the im portance of which has not yet been fully realized. Until quite recent times the man who went into the fields with a magnifying lens and a net was regarded as a more or less harmless crank. To-day that idea has become considerably modified, and man is learning that his own life is often menaced by the insignificant insects which buzz and move around him; likewise with his cattle and his crops, for these are even more threatened than he is himself. The entomologists of to-day are rendering vast services to humanity, and those of the future will wield powers the significance of which we are as yet scarcely able to comprehend. Nevertheless, the study of insect life has yet to be made popular. To assist in the later purpose the life-histories contained in this volume are designed. It is of growing importance that the public should be taught in plain and simple language the details in the lives of familiar insects - many of which are our valuable friends, and at the same time are deadly enemies of some of our worst insect foes.
