Excerpt from The Training of the Apostles, Vol. 2 The chief occupation of our Lord at this time, beyond His usual and unremitted exertions in preaching to the people, was undoubtedly the training and the formation of the Twelve Apostles. At the beginning of this volume we find Him selecting them, finally and formally, from the general company of His disciples. This great act of our Lord was followed by the delivery of the Sermon on the Plain, which fills a considerable part of the present volume, although it has not been necessary to treat it at the same length with the Sermon on the Mount, on which it is in the, main founded. It may either be considered in itself, as a monument of the moral teaching which our Lord put forward at this period of His Public Ministry, or it may be regarded as a model which the Apostles might follow, in the adaptation, to different audiences, of truths which had already been taught, but which were too important not to be repeated again and again. But it was a period which was hardly surpassed by any other in the importance of the issues which were de cided in its course, though its prominent incidents were few, and though it is possible to pass it over without much remark in framing a general narrative of our Lord's life. Excerpt from The Training of the Apostles, Vol. 4 The present volume concludes the first half of the Public Life of our Lord, if such a division can be made, not according to the space of time occupied by its parts, but according to the line of conduct chosen by our Lord in His public action. The space of time occupied by this volume and those which have pre ceded it is considerably more than half of the whole of the Public Life, for it embraces two years out of the three during which His Ministry was carried on. Indeed, the last incident comprised in this volume, is much less than a year before the Passion itself. The division which is here followed is the most natural that can be made, if we consider the great change as to His method of procedure adopted by our Lord at this point of the history, a change noted hythe Evan gelists themselves, a change which makes the account of the few months which intervene between this time and that of the Passion very different in character from that of the preceding years. If it were not for the great additions made to the history by the two last Evangelists, we should already be close upon the Passion itself in our narrative of the Life of our Lord. The title of the Training of {115 Apoivtles which has been given to the four volumes of which the present is the last, will not be understood as implying that our Lord did not begin to train His Apostles before this period, or that He did not continue their training after it. But this space of time was in a peculiar manner devoted bv Him to their training, and it was during this time that that teaching of their souls by the Providential action of the Eternal Father, of which we hear so much in the Gospels, was at work in raising their minds to the recognition of the great truth of His Divinity. It is the Confession of that Divinity by St. Peter which closes this period, by the great promise made to him by our Lord, in return for the profession of his faith, a promise in which we have for the first time a mention from our Lord's lips of the Church which He came from Heaven to found. It is this, the selection of St. Peter as the rock on which the Church is to be built, which makes the point at which this volume closes the very centre and pivot of the Gospel history. Excerpt from The Training of the Twelve; Or Passages Out of the Gospels: Exhibiting the Twelve Disciples of Jesus Under Discipline for the Apostleship The subject of this book has occupied my thoughts more or less since the commencement of my ministry, twelve years ago. Turning up a manuscript volume of jotting for the pulpit in my possession, I find its title-page is as follows: "Brief notes of sermons on Christ's intercourse with twelve disciples, preached in Cardross, begun September 1861." These notes were the rude beginnings of this work; yet not the rudest, for in the previous year I had made the same passages from the Gospels the subjects of lessons in catechumens' class. I was led to transfer these lessons from the class to the pulpit in the following way. During an autumnal holiday, spent in the country-quarters of dear friends, to whom I have many reasons to be grateful, I was in such a distempered condition of body, that all thought and feeling were dead, and I dreaded the prospect of returning to pastoral duty, being sensible of mental vacuity. At length my perplexities shaped themselves into a prayer that I might be led into green pastures, as the old ones were all nibbled bare. Shortly after thoughts reverted to the lessons given to catechumens' class, and I at once resolved to make these the subject of a course of lectures. The studies on which I entered in pursuance of this resolution, proved to be green pastured to myself at least.
