Originally published in 1581 during a very active period in the history of education in England, Mulcaster's Positions, dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I, was an ambitious bid to change the direction of English schooling. Mulcaster sets down propositions for a uniform political reformation of English schools. In arguing for public over private education, he promotes physical education, a closer control of the students admitted into schools, and ways to improve both the training and careers of teachers. This authoritative edition includes an extensive introduction with biography and background to Mulcaster's ideas. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

To Train Up a Child, first published in 1994, began as a letter to a homeschool mother in answer to her question, "How did you train your children to be so happy and obedient?" Mike did not consider himself to be an author, nor did Debi possess the means or the knowledge to publish a book. They realized that it was a big subject that could not be put into a few pages, so they wrote a book. Friends and neighbors were consulted, gleaning their views and methods of child training. They analyzed how they were influenced by the traditions they inherited from their parents, and they looked at the methods that were unique to their family. Friends and members of their church periodically read and critiqued the manuscript as it grew to book size. Twenty-one years later, To Train Up a Child has sold over 1.2 million copies in twelve languages. TTUAC has been on Amazon's best-seller list several times. This new book has added chapters and several updates. Mike and Debi have received tens of thousands of letters of gratitude and been approached by thousands of young people thanking them for their influence in the way they were raised, their parents having implemented the principles expressed in TTUAC. Mike and Debi are humbled to have played a part in so many young people's lives. There has been no editing to modify their stance on spanking. To the contrary, due to the media attacks, they have expanded and strengthened their arguments for traditional, biblical child training. There are now more than a million TTUAC books circulating in the United States that will continue to stand for traditional, biblical parenting.

Train Up That Child is a book designed to encourage parents and those involved with the development of the children of this day. Parenting is one of the hardest jobs that exist. We all need help and encouragement as we sow into the lives of children. This book will inspire you to truly consider what you plant into the minds and hearts of children, therefore, it should be read, discussed, but most importantly— applied! If you are serious about the process of training up children, you can help to develop a generation of individuals who respect themselves, as well as others. Train Up That Child calls us to go back to the basics! It will inspire action, change, and deliberate effort. In order to produce young people with vision and a clear understanding of their purpose in life, you have to see this not just as a job, but a mission. If they are strong and sharp, then our society will reflect the same characteristics. We can be known as the generation that took the task of parenting and developing our youth seriously and indeed—changed a generation. Will you do your part?

Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Do you need a devotional to help connect your family? With 100 devotionals, Faith Forward Family Devotional by authors Patrick and Ruth Schwenk equips parents to raise faith-filled kids who know, love, and live for God. Somewhere between diapers and sippy cups, piano lessons and soccer practice, dating and college searches, even the most well-intentioned family can lose sight of creating a God-centered home. As parents of four, pastor Patrick Schwenk and his wife, Ruth, of The Better Mom blog, understand the challenges--and importance--of raising faith-filled kids. Patrick and Ruth help you pass on your faith with devotions you can do at your own pace as a family. Each devotion features a Bible passage, a teaching that's applicable for kids of any age, key ideas to learn about God and His character, questions to spark family discussion, and a prayer. Faith Forward Family Devotional is aimed primarily at families with kids ages 8-12, but it also includes ideas for activities for younger children and recommendations for further study for older kids, so the whole family can join in the devotional gathering. You've passed down to your kids your last name, your love, and maybe your sense of humor or favorite hobbies. But have you passed down the most important thing: your faith? Faith Forward Family Devotional helps you grow closer to your kids as they grow closer to God. Whatever season of parenting you are in, sharing this devotional time together will help your children nourish a faith that lasts a lifetime.
