Excerpt from The Transactions of the Canadian Mining Institute, 1918, Vol. 21: With Which Is Incorporated the Transactions of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia In submitting its Annual Report upon the work and business of the Institute for the year ending December 31, 1917, the Council is gratified to record that the affairs of the Institute are in a very satisfactory condition. Despite-the fact. That there has been a considerable loss of revenue consequent on the exemption from fees of members serving with the colours, the financial position of the Institute is unimpaired. This is owing chiefly to the efforts of the 'membership Committee, ' appointed by Council, who succeeded in influencing a large increase in the membership during the year. In this connection thanks are due in particular to Mr. E. E. Campbell, Mr. J. E. Murphy, Mr. J. T. Stirling, Mr. J. H. Stovel, and Mr. Geo. Wilkinson for their zealous and devoted labours. The publications of the Institute were also considerably greater in bulk than in any previous year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Transactions of the Canadian Mining Institute, 1915, Vol. 18 It is not known to whom the isolation of zinc is due but it was mentioned by Paracelsus(1493-1541). In 1721 Henckle published his discovery of the fact that it could be obtained from calamine, and he is named by Beckman as the first to intentionally carry out the process. It seems quite certain that zinc was made in the East at a much earlier date, but authorities differ as to whether China or India was the birthplace of the process. The earliest attempt seems to have been the production of brass by the cementation of calamine ore (silicate of zinc), with native copper. Later metallic zinc, or spelter, was made, and about 1740 the art was introduced into England. In 1798 it was introduced into Silesia, Germany, by Ruhberg, (who went to England to learn about it), and into Carinthia, Austria, about the same time by Dillinger. The production of spelter in Belgium began with the experiments of Abbe Daniel Dony in 1780. Dony was an experienced chemist, whose success was finally achieved accidentally after a long series of disappointing results. While endeavouring to extract zinc from calamine by fusion, in a reverberatory furnace, it occurred to him that the heat applied was not sufficiently high and he added coal dust to the mineral to attain a higher temperature. In order to observe what took place in the interior of his furnace, he built an ordinary fiower-pot into one side to serve as a peep-hole through which he could watch the operation. The furnace having been charged and the firing begun, drops of zinc were observed to condense on the inside of the flower pot, which was cooler than the furnace itself. The method of extracting the metal by distillation was thus discovered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Transactions of the Canadian Mining Institute, 1916, Vol. 19 To put it brie y, the boy, having dissolved soap in water, holds a little of it in the bowl of his clay pipe while he blows through the stem. The soapy water forms a film that is distended by the boy's warm breath into a lovely sphere, which is lighter than the surrounding air and therefore rises, while the sunshine undergoes refraction into the colours Of the spectrum. When the boy blows through his pipe into pure water, he makes bubbles likewise, but they break instantly. It is the soap that lengthens their life. In the language of physics we say that high 'surface tension' causes the pure-water bubbles to burst immediately, while the addition of soap introduces a contaminant that lowers the tension so as to enable the bubbles to last longer. Excerpt from The Transactions of the Canadian Mining Institute, Vol. 22: With Which Is Incorporated the Transactions of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia, 1919 The establishment of an Iron and Steel Section Of the Institute was formally decided upon at the Annual General Meeting. The organization of the work of the Section has, however, been seriously delayed by a series Of untoward circum stances, not the least of which was the outbreak of the epidemic of influenza in the late autumn, necessitating the cancellation of the arrangements that had been made for meetings during the winter. It is hoped, however, that the Section will be placed on a thoroughly effective and business-like basis during 1919. Excerpt from The Transactions of the Canadian Mining Institute, 1913, Vol. 16 While I must confess to a very limited knowledge of the technical aspects of mining, I fully recognize the vast importance your deliberations can be to Canada. Until but recently we have had a most vague conception of the mineral potentialities of the Dominion, and to your Institute belongs the credit of directing attention to the great Opportunities Canada affords to those who would undertake development in this direction, while at the same time you aim to promote the welfare of existing industry. Great progress has been made in scientific knowledge in recent years, and associations such as yours have done much to make science the hand-maiden of industry. In other direc tions you have done excellent work. I refer particularly to your good offices in assisting both the Federal and Provincial governments in the framing of legislation appertaining to mining. That I realize the value and utility of your efforts is, I hope, indicated by my presence here to-day. You hold great power for the benefit of your country; and I trust this power will be exercised With increasing strength to the lasting advantage of the people of Canada. May I again express to you my heart-felt sympathy and my best wishes for the continued success of the Canadian Mining Institute. The President, Dr. Alfred E. Barlow, after expressing the Institute's acknowledgements to His Royal Highness, delivered his annual address. He said' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Transactions of the Canadian Mining Institute, Vol. 17: 1914 "I do not propose to weary you with a formal address, but shall instead, with your permission, comment briefly on the recent progress of the Canadian Mining Institute and of the industry it represents. Before doing so, however, may I take this opportunity, since at the close of this meeting I shall retire from the office which, by your suffrage, I have occupied for two successive years, to express my appreciation of the honour I have received at your hands and to thank you for your indulgence, your loyalty, and your sympathetic and ready cooperation on all occasions. To be president of the Canadian Mining Institute is a liberal education. By reason of it I believe myself to be a better and a broader-minded man. I can only say that during my term of office I have had but one end in mind. My aim has been to advance the objects and promote the interests of the Institute; and I am proud to say that, in consequence of the support and assistance so freely and generously given me by my colleagues on the Council and by the members generally, that these efforts have not been entirely resultless. The increase in membership during the past two years has been eminently satisfactory. It represents an increase of approximately twenty-two per cent.; but these figures do not adequately indicate the gain in another and important direction. Thus in the early history of the Institute, and even in later 'boom' times many became associated with the society to promote solely their private ends. They had no real sympathy with the objects of the Institute and when it ceased to serve their purpose they withdrew, or ceased to pay their fees.
