The Paradox Of Subjectivity written by David Carr and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-06-03 with Philosophy categories.

Much effort in recent philosophy has been devoted to attacking the metaphysics of the subject. Identified largely with French post-structuralist thought, yet stemming primarily from the influential work of the later Heidegger, this attack has taken the form of a sweeping denunciation of the whole tradition of modern philosophy from Descartes through Nietzsche, Husserl, and Existentialism. In this timely study, David Carr contends that this discussion has overlooked and eventually lost sight of the distinction between modern metaphysics and the tradition of transcendental philosophy inaugurated by Kant and continued by Husserl into the twentieth century. Carr maintains that the transcendental tradition, often misinterpreted as a mere alternative version of the metaphysics of the subject, is in fact itself directed against such a metaphysics. Challenging prevailing views of the development of modern philosophy, Carr proposes a reinterpretation of the transcendental tradition and counters Heidegger's influential readings of Kant and Husserl. He defends their subtle and complex transcendental investigations of the self and the life of subjectivity. In Carr's interpretation, far from joining the project of metaphysical foundationalism, transcendental philosophy offers epistemological critique and phenomenological description. Its aim is not metaphysical conclusions but rather an appreciation for the rich and sometimes contradictory character of experience. The transcendental approach to the self is skillfully summed up by Husserl as "the paradox of human subjectivity: being a subject for the world and at the same time being an object in the world." Proposing striking new readings of Kant and Husserl and reviving a sound awareness of the transcendental tradition, Carr's distinctive historical and systematic position will interest a wide range of readers and provoke discussion among philosophers of metaphysics, epistemology, and the history of philosophy.

This thesis attempts to resolve the learner's paradox on the basis of Merleau-Ponty's insights in the Phenomenology of Perception by showing that the paradox is misleading in at least two important ways: it presumes that our "knowing" relation to the world operates in the form of explicit knowledge, whereas really we mainly operate on the basis of a pre-reflective familiarity with various things; and, it presumes that we are "in charge" of our learning, whereas really learning is part of the ongoing coupling of self and world. The first chapter offers a reading of Plato's Meno that argues that Plato implicitly offers a solution to the paradox that is compatible with Merleau-Ponty's. The second chapter explicates Merleau-Ponty's own version of the learner's paradox. The third chapter criticizes the learner's paradox from the Meno using Merleau-Ponty's insights. The conclusion offers a few ideas on what shape teaching should take, given the foregoing account of learning, that are drawn from John Locke's "Some Thoughts Concerning Education."

The root of human dilemmas, although they always present themselves in multiple hues, invariably plunges into the question of human dualism, consciousness and matter. There's a subtle cosmic Darwinism going on that we haven't paid attention to yet. A real universal filter is at work, silently decimating intelligent biological species across the Universe. From our animal matrix either this subtle “something” that we decide to identify as “consciousness” will emerge, or our bodily instincts will inevitably lead us to nuclear suicide. The "Fermi paradox" suggests this possibility explicitly. The human mind, this highly efficient and complex biological software, emerged from this same Darwinian process of violent and brutal struggle for survival. So, the mind also naturally tends to aggression and violence when dissociated from consciousness, that “energy” that many decided to call pejoratively as “the ghost in the machine”. The human world in general expresses precisely such “reality” created by the mind, when dissociated from consciousness. Hence our inclination towards indifference and aggression. Our animal instincts are still highly active, determining our every move. So, the nuclear age effectively corresponds to the turning point of intelligent species. Every day we seem to take a step forward towards "defcon 1", the threat of imminent nuclear destruction. The existence of the doomsday clock is known only to a few. Atomic weapons are not "peace insurers" by the certainty of mutual assured destruction (M.A.D.). This is a truly insane perspective that exposes us in our ravings, making it more than clear that we have deviated from our natural evolutionary course. However, if we implode ourselves, it will only show that we never had what it takes to persevere as a conscious biological species. The Universe, however, will lose nothing. It is it's simple and natural way of functioning. The Parable of the Sower reminds us of this reality.

The Uses Of Paradox written by Matthew C. Bagger and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Philosophy categories.

In this groundbreaking comparative study, Matthew Bagger investigates the role of paradox in Western and Asian religious discourse. Drawing on both philosophy and social scientific theory, he offers a naturalistic explanation of religion's oft-noted propensity to sublime paradox and argues that religious thinkers employ intractable paradoxes as the basis for various techniques of self-transformation. Considering the writings of Kierkegaard, Pseudo-Dionysus, St. John of the Cross, N'g'rjuna, and Chuang-tzu, among others, Bagger identifies two religious uses of paradox: cognitive asceticism, which wields the psychological discomfort of paradox as an instrument of self-transformation, and mysticism, which seeks to transform the self through an alleged extraordinary cognition that ineffably comprehends paradox. Bagger contrasts these techniques of self-transformation with skepticism, which cultivates the appearance of contradiction in order to divest a person of beliefs altogether. Bagger further contends that a thinker's social attitudes determine his or her response to paradox. Attitudes concerning crossing the boundary of a social group prefigure attitudes concerning supposed truths that lie beyond the boundaries of understanding. Individuals who fear crossing the boundary of their social group and would prohibit them tend to use paradox ascetically, while individuals who find the controlled incorporation of outsiders enriching commonly find paradox revelatory. Although scholars have long noted that religious discourse seems to cultivate and perpetuate paradox, their scholarship tends to ratify religious attitudes toward paradox instead of explaining the unusual reaction paradox provokes. A vital contribution to discussions of mystical experience, The Uses of Paradox reveals how much this experience relies on social attitudes and cosmological speculation.

Is belief in God at odds with the theory of evolution and other scientific discoveries? Why do people of faith fight and even kill each other although they worship the same God? Shouldn't we all be working together to save life on Earth -- ourselves -- from ecological collapse? "Awakening: In Pursuit of the Divine Paradox" calls for all God's people, whether from East or West, to unite in a Worldwide Great Awakening to preserve the Earth from greed and mindless exploitation. It lays the groundwork for a spiritual revolution in which the faithful: 1) transcend their differences; 2) become one with God, and each other and all life; and 3) in this unity transform to make peace with ourselves, other people and the planet. Thought-provoking, highly readable, Awakening, as noted by Artyfact magazine in the United Kingdom: "...presents a personal view of Christian cosmology informed by modern science and the wisdom of the East. This sounds like deep stuff, and it is, but Huth has performed a minor miracle in discussing profound theological issues in an accessible manner [without] specialist jargon".
