Matthew, a sophomore at Humboldt State University, wants to study abroad. He currently excels in his studies, and he feels it's time to leave the country. He one day runs to the study-abroad office on campus and asks if his school has a program for Japan. Unfortunately, the school has no program to go to the country, but they recommend him to a language program in China. Seeking freedom from boredom, Matthew, a young American college student, decides to embark on the trip of a lifetime to Xi'an. There, he has the task of learning one of the world's most difficult languages, Mandarin Chinese. Xi'an, home to some of China's most notable dynasties, is enriched with culture and beauty. Matthew's goal is to endure this language-intensive program and then flee to Japan. Before he can do this, he has to endure six months of living in Communist China. Matthew has no knowledge of China, and more importantly, he still is in the crossroad of finding his destiny. Born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, Matthew enters China innocent and unprepared. Having a history of poor academics, his goal is to discover the art of studying and learning. Matthew leaves home, unaware of the characters he will meet and the inspiration he will gain. Matthew is in for an eye-opening experience from one of the world's greatest civilizations.

Trudging home, Fran Hunter's eye is drawn to a vivid splash of colour on the white ground, ravens circling above. It is the strangled body of her teenage neighbour. As Fran opens her mouth to scream, the ravens continue their deadly dance . . . The body is found close to the home of a lonely outcast and local suspicion falls firmly on him. But when Inspector Jimmy Perez insists on broadening the search for suspects, a veil of distrust and fear is thrown over the entire community. Atop the Unaka Mountain overlooking the many ridges and valleys, looking out across the vast expanse from east to west, I became aware of distant mountains that my father could name without a moments hesitation and point out the lay of the old trace of the old Wagon Road. Years upon years ago, many events occurred, and some of them were formed into stories that were told to children around the campfire when they camped along the old trails. As time changed the children into old men, a few stories were told over and over until they became woven into the fabric of folklore. Now I cannot name but a few of the mountains, and my father is gone . . . No doubt most of the Indian tales are gone too, lost in the pages of time. Aided with folklore and imagination, maybe we can unweave one or two stories that otherwise might have been lost. When I was but a lad, many were the old stories I heard. One of those was most fascinating, the story of a lost mine, Lost Treasure of Long Ago, and another was one called Bear Wallow, a little flat at the head of a long valley where bears were seen that were eerie looking because of the yellow mudholes that they wallowed in. Perhaps the story of Yellow Bear and his horse that wore silver shoes is one of those tales that has been uncovered from the lost pages of time.

Travels In Siberia written by Ian Frazier and has been published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-12 with Travel categories.

A Dazzling Russian travelogue from the bestselling author of Great Plains In his astonishing new work, Ian Frazier, one of our greatest and most entertaining storytellers, trains his perceptive, generous eye on Siberia, the storied expanse of Asiatic Russia whose grim renown is but one explanation among hundreds for the region's fascinating, enduring appeal. In Travels in Siberia, Frazier reveals Siberia's role in history—its science, economics, and politics—with great passion and enthusiasm, ensuring that we'll never think about it in the same way again. With great empathy and epic sweep, Frazier tells the stories of Siberia's most famous exiles, from the well-known—Dostoyevsky, Lenin (twice), Stalin (numerous times)—to the lesser known (like Natalie Lopukhin, banished by the empress for copying her dresses) to those who experienced unimaginable suffering in Siberian camps under the Soviet regime, forever immortalized by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in The Gulag Archipelago. Travels in Siberia is also a unique chronicle of Russia since the end of the Soviet Union, a personal account of adventures among Russian friends and acquaintances, and, above all, a unique, captivating, totally Frazierian take on what he calls the "amazingness" of Russia—a country that, for all its tragic history, somehow still manages to be funny. Travels in Siberia will undoubtedly take its place as one of the twenty-first century's indispensable contributions to the travel-writing genre.

Instead of backtracking and taking a longer route around the solitary guardian, OLeary decides to press ona decision that will forever change his life. A dust storm materializes suddenly; when it passes, OLeary discovers he is surrounded by a tribe of mysterious people, apparently native to the valley. They tie him up and take him to their village. He is subjected to a series of trials in which he meets a shaman, the chief of the tribe, changing women, ephemeral beings, and a persistent raven. Eventually, he learns that the people, aided by natural monoliths, are guardians of a special way of life. OLeary leaves the valley with a message he must share with the rest of the world, but nobody will believe him. A kind, anonymous woman records his words, but the manuscript soon disappears. Years later, the handwritten testament is discovered buried in a desk, bringing to light a valuable lesson for anyone willing to believe the story.
