Edith Wharton (1862-1937), born Edith Newbold Jones, was an American novelist, short story writer, and designer. She combined her insider's view of America's privileged classes with a brilliant, natural wit to write humourous and incisive novels and short stories. Wharton was well-acquainted with many of her era's literary and public figures, including Henry James and Theodore Roosevelt. Besides her writing, she was a highly regarded landscape architect, interior designer, and taste-maker of her time. She wrote several influential books, including The Decoration of Houses (1897), her first published work, and Italian Villas and Their Gardens (1904). The Age of Innocence (1920), perhaps her best known work, won the 1921 Pulitzer Prize for literature, making her the first woman to win the award. Her other works include: The Greater Inclination (1899), The Touchstone (1900), Sanctuary (1903), The Descent of Man and Other Stories (1904), The House of Mirth (1905), Madame de Treymes (1907), The Fruit of the Tree (1907), The Hermit and the Wild Woman and Other Stories (1908), Ethan Frome (1912), In Morocco (1921), and The Glimpses of the Moon (1921).

Throughout her career Wharton wrote ghost stories, and is a central figure within the genre in the twentieth century. When she collected many of her ghost stories together in Ghosts (1937) she put them under the 'special protection' of Walter de la Mare. Like him, she manages to evoke uncannily convincing atmospheres and characters, and in such stories as 'Afterward' the way in which the tale is told is so satisfying that one can only admire her craftsmanship. Wharton's collection Ghosts is described by E.F. Bleiler as a 'landmark volume in supernatural fiction', and to this we have been able to add a number of other tales of the supernatural, many of which will be unknown to her readers.

In spite of the balmy temperature and complicated conveniences ofFaxon's bedroom, the injunction was not easy to obey. It was wonderfulluck to have found a night's shelter under the opulent roof of Overdale, and he tasted the physical satisfaction to the full. But the place, for all itsingenuities of comfort, was oddly cold and unwelcoming. He couldn't havesaid why, and could only suppose that Mr. Lavington's intensepersonality-intensely negative, but intense all the same-must, in someoccult way, have penetrated every corner of his dwelling. Perhaps, though, it was merely that Faxon himself was tired and hungry, more deeply chilledthan he had known till he came in from the cold, and unutterably sick of allstrange houses, and of the prospect of perpetually treading other people'sstairs."I hope you're not famished?" Rainer's slim figure was in the doorway."My uncle has a little business to attend to with Mr. Grisben, and we don'tdine for half an hour. Shall I fetch you, or can you find your way down?Come straight to the dining-room-the second door on the left of the longgallery."He disappeared, leaving a ray of warmth behind him, and Faxon, relieved, lit a cigarette and sat down by the fi

Edith Wharton (1862-1937) was an American novelist, short story writer, and designer. Wharton drew upon her insider's knowledge of the upper class New York "aristocracy" to realistically portray the lives and morals of the Gilded Age. In 1921, she became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Literature, for her novel The Age of Innocence. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1996. Among her other well known works are the The House of Mirth and the novella Ethan Frome. Despite not publishing her first novel until she was forty, Wharton became an extraordinarily productive writer. In addition to her 15 novels, seven novellas, and eighty-five short stories, she published poetry, books on design, travel, literary and cultural criticism, and a memoir.
