This book is a treatment of Shi'a Islam from the emic or inside perspective of Shi'a Islam itself, as opposed to the perspective of orientalism, or of comparative religion, or sociology or some other branch of the humanities with their modern Western perspectives, all of which are philosophical approaches (in the sense that they have philosophical rather than religious underpinnings) and therefore do not, strictly speaking, deal with the religion itself as it is understood by the clerisy of its practitioners, but do so from a perspective and ideological framework that is alien and indeed antithetical and at times hostile to it. The True Origins and Teachings of Shi'a Islam is perhaps the first major work which is a single-volume treatment of the religion of Shi'a Islam as such, which approaches the subject not only from an insider's perspective, but one that is also comparative, comparing and contrasting the origins and teachings of Shi'a Islam with that of the mainstream or majoritarian strain. To put it another way, Sabah Bayati's major contribution to Islamic studies and Shi'a studies in particular deals with the intellectual and specifically theological history of Islam as opposed to its political and military history, which is the usual focus of Western and orientalist approaches, which have not really understood Islam's early intellectual and theological history, and are thus at a loss as to be able to explain it. The book is divided into six chapters. The first discusses what Islam and submission to the will of God mean. The second discusses the sources of religion authority (and how Sonni and Shi'a Islam differ on this point, i.e. the crucial question of the difference between nass and ejtehad, and how these two different takes bear on the definition of Islam, i.e. on submission to the will of God). Chapters three and four provide a detailed discussion of the origin of Shi'a Islam and its early development; a brief Shi'a Creed is also provided. Chapter five discusses the deviated and extremist sects which Shi'a Islam's enemies have associated with it, and disambiguates Shi'a Islam from them. And finally, chapter six discusses some additional false memes which the disingenuous and/ or uninformed have associated with Shi'a Islam, including the Abdollah b. Saba meme and the meme of the supposed Persian Origin of Shi'a Islam.

Who are the Shi'a? presents the creedal or fundamental beliefs of Shiʻa Islam while at the same time addressing many of the spurious beliefs that are erroneously attributed to it. The question as to who the Shia are is often posed, with most commentators often giving a narrow historical view. This book takes a more comprehensive look at the true origins and beliefs of the Shi'a. It dispels many myths and misinformation associated with their true origins. Who are the Shiʻa? begins with a discussion of the difference between the Sunni and Shīʻa take on the key concept of ijtihad. It then discusses the prerequisites for having religious authority, and who the members of the House of the Prophet are (the issue of the ʻismat or inerrancy of the Ahl al-Bayt), and proceeds to provide scriptural proofs concerning the designation to the succession of the Prophet. The book proceeds to establish the fact that the Prophet occasionally used the word Shiʻa for the companions and followers of Imam Ali, and that he would give these companions or followers (shiʻa) glad tidings that they were on the right path, and would be among those who attain salvation. It then discusses the Pledge of Allegiance given to Imam Ali in the presence and at the behest of the Prophet and provides a summary treatment of the various sects within Islam, with an emphasis on the deviances of the extremist or ghulāt sects. It then discusses the meaning of Shiʻa Islam and the creedal beliefs of the Twelvers. The final chapter disabuses the reader definitively of the widespread and virulent Abdullāh b. Saba meme (using the priceless research of Allama Askari), and the other false meme of the Persian origin of Shi'a Islam. Readers will not only get a very clear picture of the origins of the creedal beliefs of the Shiʻa but will see the historical-political context in which the creed developed under the auspices of the Most Noble Prophet himself, and under that of his purified and inerrant progeny.

The present work is a summarized version of Shi‘i Islam: Origins, Faith and Practices (2003, ICAS Press) by the same author. This shorter version aims to briefly address main issues related to Islam in general, and Shi‘i Islam in particular. These two works represent a modest attempt to fill some of the gaps that exist in the field of Islamic studies in general, and Shi‘i studies in particular. Though simply and clearly written, they are outcomes of more than twenty years of involvement in Islamic studies, and based to some extent on two series of lectures about Shi‘i Islam delivered to English-speaking audiences: a first set of some fifty lectures delivered at Jami‘at al-Zahra (a prominent Islamic seminary for women) in Qum, Iran in 1995 and 1996, and a second set of some thirty lectures delivered at the Manchester Islamic Institute and the Shi‘a Welfare Centre in Manchester, England in 1998 and 1999. The first chapter begins by expounding both the literal and technical meanings of the term “Shi‘a”, and references are made to statements of famous scholars in this regard. Then it proceeds to study the origins of Shi‘i Islam and how it became established. The second chapter studies the sources of Shi‘i thought, i.e. the Qur’an, the Sunnah, reason and consensus. Discussing 6 the status of the Qur’an, the chapter goes on to establish that the Shi‘a like other Muslims believe that the Qur’an which is present today is an embodiment of divine revelation to the Prophet Muhammad. The chapter continues by explaining the second most important source, i.e. the Sunnah, which includes the sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad. The Qur’an itself asks Muslims to take the Prophet as their role model, to refer to him to judge and settle their conflicts, and speaks of the Prophet as the one who recites, teaches and explains the Qur’an. In this chapter there is also a discussion about the household of the Prophet (Ahlul Bayt) and their role in presenting the Sunnah. Then there follows a discussion about the importance of reason and its role in understanding Islamic beliefs, values and practical laws. Finally there is a discussion about legal consensus and how it is viewed with respect to the Sunnah in the Shi‘i teachings. The third chapter studies fundamental doctrines of the Shi‘i faith. Along with Unity of God, prophethood and resurrection which constitute the principles of religion for Islam and other divine religions, some important additional doctrines such as divine justice and imamate are studied. These doctrines may partly be shared by other Muslims, but the Shi‘a are those who believe in all of them. The fourth chapter is a very brief account of Shi‘i practices along with brief references to the objectives and principles underlying them. These practices are in principle shared by all Muslims, though there may be some differences in particulars among different Islamic schools. The fifth and final chapter is a short discussion about the Shi‘a world today. This chapter starts with a brief account of 7 the latest statistics about the present Muslim and Shi‘i population of the world. There is also a breakdown of religious affiliations of some countries with a long history of Shi‘i presence. Although there are no accurate and approved statistics on the current Shi‘a population in the world, efforts have been made here to collect the best available.

Moderate and Balanced Muslims; Fundamentalists and Terrorists; Shias and Sunnis - these labels are household words throughout the world these days. Ordinary people come across these groups often through the news media. Some certainly are keen to learn more about the Muslims in general, many of whom are their next-door neighbors. The book, though written with a focus on the High School age group, also provides enough knowledge to anyone who is interested in grasping the basics of Shia Islam. It is concisely written to provide a clearer picture of the Shia beliefs and its take on various matters. The author wishes to create understanding and bridge the gap between the various ethnic and religious groups via this book. The Shias, the followers of true Islam, over the centuries have been marginalized by force or coercion. The Shias are a pluralistic, all-inclusive, non-violent and tolerant community who adhere to their roots, adore their beliefs and admire their independence of thought and action within the boundaries of Islam. The Shias follow the viable advice of their leader, Imam Ali the son-in-law of Islam's last Prophet, who once counseled one of his Governors to be respectful, kind, fair and tolerant to both Muslims because they are his brothers in faith, as well as to non-Muslims because they are his brothers in humanity. And that is the overall gist of Shiaism. This book is an attempt to provide a sample of the same.

Shia Muslims account for between 10 and 15 percent of the world's Muslim population, and while some Americans know that there are two major sects in Islam, Shia and Sunni, not many of those know the differences between the two traditions. Further compounding the problem is the fact that those few who are aware of the dissimilarities almost always acquire their knowledge of Islam from a Sunni perspective. The result is that a rich and important tradition within Islam remains unknown or misunderstood. A Basic Guide to Shia Islam is an ideal resource for the curious, either in a classroom setting or learning independently. Author Saba Fatima covers the breadth of the tradition in accessible prose, arranged in simple chapters, and with the benefit of years teaching the material in the classroom.

The Imam, the Divine Guide, is the central point around which the Shi'ite religion turns. The power of Shi'ism comes from the actions of the Imam. This title is reserved exclusively for the sucessors of the prophets in their mission. The author shows that from the beginning of Shi'ite Islam until the tenth century, the Imam was primarily a master of knowledge with supernatural powers, not a jurist theologian. The Imam is the threshold through which God and the creatures communicate. He is thus a cosmic necessity, the key and the center of the universal economy of the sacred. The author presents Shi'ism as a religion founded on double dimensions where the role of the leader remains constantly central: perpetual initiation into divine secrets and continued confrontation with anti-initiation forces. Without esotericism, exotericism loses its meaning. Early Imamism is an esoteric doctrine. Historically, then, at the beginning of esotericism in Islam, we find an initiatory, mystical, and occultist doctrine. This is the first book to systematically explore the immense literature attributed to the Imams themselves in order to recover the authentic original vision. It restores an essential source of esotericism in the world of Islam.
