Excerpt from The True Story of Alsace-Lorraine The idea of writing this book occurred to me when I found, both by conversing with friends and acquaintances and by listening at odd moments to remarks passed by "men in the street," how very little is known about Alsace-Lorraine in Great Britain. The general ignorance appeared to me to be the more regrettable as my acquaintance with all the more important German utterances and writings on this subject since 1871 convinced me, already at the outset of the Great War, that whatever conditions the Allies might resolve to exact of Germany, the one which, more than any other, she would resist to her utmost would be the restitution of Alsace-Lorraine to France. Nevertheless, it was absurd for Baron von Kuhlmann to assert, as he did shortly after his appointment as German Minister for Foreign Affairs, that the sole obstacle to peace was the question of Alsace-Lorraine. As our Foreign Secretary, Mr. Balfour, replied - virtually repeating the utterances of our successive Prime Ministers, Mr. Asquith and Mr. Lloyd George-we undoubtedly desire to see Alsace-Lorraine restored to France; but it is ridiculous to imagine that this one question "stands out solitary, preeminent, unconnected with any other of the objects of the war." "We are fighting," as Mr. Balfour said, "in order, in the first place, that Europe may be freed from the perpetual menace of the military party in Germany"; and, assuredly, if that object is to be attained, questions affecting quite a number of countries will require solution. This fascinating book, originally published in 1919 as the First World War drew to a close tackles the question of Alsace-Lorraine, one of the chief causes of the war and the most important obstacles to peace. Cerf addressed the book to Americans in order to present facts which would "confirm the belief that peace can be restored to Europe and the world only after the return of the lost provinces to France". A compelling read that is thoroughly recommended for inclusion on the bookshelf of the amateur and professional historian alike. Contents: Germany's Claims to Alsace-Lorraine; The Consent of the Governed; Persecution: 1871-1914; The Question of Autonomy; The Failure of Germanization; During the War; The Economic Question; The Question of a Plebiscite; Conclusion; Bibliography. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Alsace-Lorraine was ceded by France to Germany in 1871 after the Franco-German war, then retroceded to France in 1919 after the First World War. It was again ceded to Germany in 1940 during the Second World War and finally retroceded to France in 1945. Today, Alsace-Lorraine is a 5,067 square mile territory in France. However, as you'll find out, it did not use to be so. Before the wars and the back-and-forth ownership between France and Germany, Alsace-Lorraine was Alsace and Lorraine, two distinct territories with different customs, resources and characteristics. Most documented histories of Alsace-Lorraine reach back, but not to the very beginning. Ruth Putnam's does. She gives an in-depth history of Alsace and Lorraine all the way back to the time of Caesar, 58BC capturing their identities, politics and customs before they became bounties of war. You are about to learn the true history of Alsace-Lorraine.

"ALSACE AND LORRAINE. During forty-three years these two names have been linked together in a neat phrase. Under that verbal yoke they passed, as the result of the fortunes of war, from one political framework to another. But the two applied to distinct entities. The gradual evolution of each into a semblance of unity out of a congeries of private estates and ecclesiastical foundations, the liege lords they acquired or found imposed upon them, mediate or immediate, the resources, characteristics, customs of each belong to different stories, though sometimes, indeed, containing similar chapters. Alsace and Lorraine were alike in being tiny buffer territories, occasionally little more than geographical expressions, wedged between big “interests.” Both have suffered as shuttlecocks under blows of battledores from the east and the west. Here are in brief the stories of each." This classic contains the following chapters: Alsace and Lorraine Alsace I. Romans, Gauls, and Others on the Soil of Alsace II. The Treaty of Verdun and Other Pacts Affecting Alsace III. The Dream of a Middle Kingdom IV. The People of Alsace in the Fifteenth Century and After V. The Thirty Years’ War and the Peace of Westphalia VI. Louis XIV. And Strasburg VII. Alsace After Annexation to France Lorraine I. Racial Elements II. When the Map Was in the Making III. The Aspirations of Burgundy IV. The New Learning V. The House of Lorraine in Europe VI. The Last Dukes of Lorraine VII. The French Revolution VIII. The Language Elsass-Lothringen I. After the Cession
