Excerpt from The Truth About the Frank Case All humans are much alike, under whatever skies they dwell, or according to whatsoever creed they profess. The heart of the Russian peasant is much like the heart of the Illinois farmer. It is only the things we have been taught, and among them creed hate, that makes us different, one from the other. Who that has read of the persecution of the Jews in Russia and in Spain is not ready to cry out in condemnation of all racial and religious prejudice? Excerpt from Frank Harper: Or, the Country-Boy in Town Frank's bed was not so good as the one which he had left at Coventry; and he was surprised, for he thought every thing would be very grand in the great city. But he soon forgot himself, and slept, (as all healthy boys sleep, ) soundly and well, until the day dawned. It was a bright winter morning, and Ned and Joe were already dressed. They did not wait for Bible or prayer, but hurried away to their stores. Frank had time only to read a few verses, and to Offer a short prayer. Boys in the city must rise early, or they will lose their devotions. And unless they form the habit at first, they are apt to have prayerless days. I am afraid there are hundreds who never pray at all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. The Hand Of The Potter A Tragedy In Four Acts Classic Reprint written by Theodore Dreiser and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-26 with Literary Collections categories.

Excerpt from The Hand of the Potter: A Tragedy in Four Acts The story of a victim of a certain phase of kraft-ebbing demoralization - one has a sneaking suspicion that the late Leo Frank case may in a general way have suggested the theme to the author - Dreiser has written a play whose chief merit (as it is ever one of Dreiser's most notable assets) consists in the achievement, in the very_ teeth of life's low derisory comedy, of a poignant and tragic pity. This deep compassion, this summoning forth, honest ly and soundly, of forbearance, this is the note Dreiser can strike as few other Amer icana can strike it. Out of the tin of the grotesque, the ignoble and the mean, he can evoke the golden E flat of human frailty and charity as few modern Euro peans can evoke it. And yet with never a suspicion of the bogus heart interest that passes promiscuously for the currency of art, with never a suspicion of slyly studied fact blue-penciling or of self-compromise. From Sister Carrie down through Jen nie Gerhardt and, with but a few skips, on to Twelve Men, one encounters al ways this grim and understanding heart upon a hilltop, at once moved and im mobile; at once condemning and forgiving. Without sentimentality as without imper. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Heart to Heart, Frank Talks on Familiar Themes It's a handicap for any person or enter-prise not to have an enemy. Enemies are one of God's methods of preventing men from becoming molluscs. An enemy is an unintentional friend. It is commonly said that God gives us our relatives while we choose our friends. I doubt that some of our rela tiyes come from God. They suggest another source. I do believe, however, that God gives us our enemies and that we are selected by our friends.
