Excerpt from The Truth and Error of Christian Science I have made little allusion to the various, more or less mutually opposed, schools of Healing by Thought, and have not even mentioned M r Dowie, who has had a follow ing rivalling in numbers that of Mrs Eddy, and who is alleged to have produced quite as striking cures without physical means. But he has attached his healing to no new theory of Metaphysic, or of Christian doctrine, and therefore does not propagate a belief in his cures which is subversive of ordinary doctrine or of common sense. Consequently there is nothing new in his teaching to criticise; and as regards his healing, if there is any truth in the theory given as accounting for the cures of Christian Science, namely, the calling out, by some means, of a latent vitality re siding in the sub-consciousness of the patient, it will equally account for those of Mr Dowie. Excerpt from The Truth About Christian Science Of all the delusions, in the matter of religion, which have at any time gained credence among apparently intelligent people, the most surprising, perhaps, is that known in recent times as Christian Science." It is quite obvious that, as has been well remarked, it is neither Christian nor Science. For a doctrine professing to be Christian should (as is evident) be one founded on the words of Christ as a whole, which the person holding such a doctrine endeavors to explain in their genuine sense; rather than on theories which he himself has elaborated, and supports, here and there, by such words of Christ as he can manage to fit to suit his purpose. Also, a system professing to be scientific should rest on a solid basis of fact, and be stated clearly and distinctly, not in vague generalities, which are either truisms or have no precise meaning whatever. A scientific system should be in some way a contribution to our knowledge. But the most favorable criticism on the lucubration known as "Christian Science" would be that it contains "some things which are new, and some things which are true; but the things which are true are not new, and the things which are new are not true."
