Excerpt from The Truth of the Christian Religion, Vol. 2 To this assertion it may no doubt be objected, that sometimes the solitary thinker seeks the truth for him self and only for himself, without being concerned about coming to such an understanding with others. But the Objection is Of no moment. In the first place, it may fairly be asked whether the impulse to com municate truth does not naturally grow out of the search for it and the discovery Of it; whether it is not a case as rare as it is abnormal, if that does not occur in any way; whether, indeed, there is truth at all for the individual as such, since what the word denotes really exists from the nature of it for every one, and is meant to exist for every one. But above all it would be advisable even for the solitary thinker to seek the truth which he craves only for himself, just as if he wanted to come to an understanding with all mankind and to convince all. If he fails to do so, he may rest assured that instead Of finding truth he will find error. He takes with him on his career a sure guarantee of that as a matter Of course, in the form Of his own likes and dislikes; and he does not want to do that, we may be sure, if he is really concerned about the truth. Thus it cannot but be the case that the purpose Of coming to an understanding with others, and if possible with all, must decide as to the choice Of the starting-point. It no where pre sents us with a connected scheme of ethics, but it does far better in advancing the most simple precepts rela tive to every part of moral duty, and accompanying them with the most powerful incentives to upright and holy conduct. As the records of living things in the first period of the young earth, if there were any, are said to have been destroyed in the heat of its primeval fire, so many a document which would tell us of the life of the first Christians perished in the times of perse cution. There seems to be a providential reason for this destruction of ancient records. Our lord would seem to wish to avert the eyes of Christians from dead tradition to living authority. While enough is left to show that the early Christians were Catholics, not enough remains to base our faith solely on the history of the past. More than sufficient remains to prove the identity of the ancient and modern Church; yet the attempt to make the Church of the Fathers the only standard of Christian truth becomes simply absurd, when there are too few Fathers to enable us to construct out of them a complete account of the faith and practice of the first centuries.
