Excerpt from Literary Types: Being Essays in Criticism I have applied the title of "Literary Types" to the following essays in criticism, because each writer that I have treated of seems to me to develop a particular phase in literary history. Landor I have termed "Dramatist," not because he wrote one or two plays, but because all the literary work he did was essentially dramatic in intention and execution. I have appended the epithet of "Man of Letters" to De Quincey for the reason that no narrower term seems able to adequately express his compass or versatility. The words "Essayist," "Philosopher," and "Novelist," apply naturally, without need of any explanation here, to Lamb, Carlyle, and Dickens. A word is, perhaps, necessary to explain why I have set down the name "Poet" as an epithet distinctive of Coleridge, considering what I have said of him in the following pages. Excerpt from A Study of the Types of Literature The chronological method of arrangement has been followed. Each type has been traced from its earliest appearance to the pres ent time, and those that have come to be regarded as the best exam ples of each form have been especially noted, and, Wherever pos sible, studied. Some of these, however, have been omitted here be cause they are usually emphasized in earlier years of the high School course, and others, because they are not suitable for high school study. The chronological tables given in the back of the book will be of value in keeping before the pupil the time sequence so that the types will not become detached in his mind from their literary periods. It has been deemed wise to include everything essential to the course in this one volume, with the exception of the material for outside readings, and the text of The Tale of Two Cities, full notes of which, however, are given. It is hoped that this wide choice of material, as well as the very full lists for outside readings in connection with each type, will make the book very adaptable and useful for the needs of experienced teachers even though they may, perhaps, wish to make some additions or substitutions for the selections used. It is also hoped that it will prove of especial value to inexperienced teachers, to those who have small library facilities, and to students who must economize in the cost of a course. Should there not be time to read in class all of the selections given here, some of this work could be assigned for outside readings. Excerpt from Literary Criticism Than his own, which was an age Of collapse. But in the England Of Shakspeare, as in the Athens Of Aristophanes, the surface of society in cities still rocked, or at least undulated, with the ground swcll surviving from periods of intestine tumult and insecurity. The times were still martial and restless; men still wore swords in pacific assemblies; the intellect Of the age was a fermenting intellect; it was a revolutionary intellect. And comedy itself, colored by the moving pageantries Of life, was more sinewy, more audacious in its movements; spoke with something more Of an impassioned tone; and was hung with draperies more rich, more voluminous, more picturesque. On the other hand, the age of the Athenian Menander, or the English Congreve, though still an unsettled age, was far less insecure in its condition Of police, and far less showy in its exterior aspect. In England it is true that a pictur esque costume still prevailed the whole people were still draped1 professionally; each man's dress pro claimed his calling; and so far it might be said, natio comoedia est. But the characteristic and dividing spirit had fled, whilst the forms survived; and those middle men had universally arisen whose equivocal relations to different employments broke down the strength Of contrast between them. Com edy, therefore, was thrown more exclusively upon the interior man upon the nuances Of his nature, Or upon the finer spirit of his manners. It was now the acknowledged duty of comedy to fathom the coy nesses Of human nature, and to arrest the fleeting phenomena of human demeanor. Excerpt from Countries of the Mind: Essays in Literary Criticism Many of them were written on the occasion of anniversaries. There is something arbitrary, therefore, in grouping them in a single volume; and yet perhaps their association is not really quite so accidental as may at first sight appear. The year 1821, in which Dostoevsky, Baudelaire, Flaubert, and Amiel were born, was obviously a crucial moment in the spiritual history of the nineteenth century; and these four men, animated by a similar spirit of disillusion, are best understood in relation to one another. Dostoevsky, it is true, is treated only incidentally in this volume: but I may be allowed to refer the reader to my earlier book, Fyodor Dostoevsky A Critical Study. The two essays on Shakespeare, the one as general as the other is particular, deal with What is essentially the same subject; while the two essays on Clare and Collins are complementary, as exhibiting two directly contrasted types of poetic sensibility. Excerpt from The Evolution of Literature The empire of letters is extensive and extending. It must be conceded that to write a complete account of literary evolution is a task too great for any one person during a lifetime. It seemed better, therefore, to accomplish a limited work with relative thorough ness rather than to attempt a stupendous undertaking that might never be more than a torso of criticism. At the outset two plans suggested themselves-40 trace the evolution of a single literary type, so far as that is possible with the data at command, or to trace in less detail the successive phases of literature as a whole. After no little hesitation the latter plan com mended itself as preferable. Even if much more intricate, it seemed to hold out greater hope of discerning with reasonable clearness the organic unity of literary evolution, for the internal process is exceedingly complex. It makes the rough places smoother, however, if the general trend of literary processes be indicated without undue intrusion of the inner entanglements of the problem.
