With law and lifestyle changes, the 'local' in many areas of NZ is having trouble surviving. Our rural hotels, in particular, are noticing a drastic downturn in trade. Hotels are being sold and the buildings put to other uses, or just closing and the building falls into disrepair. For over 20 years Bob Walters lived with agoraphobia. Then, after a promise to his dying brother, and with help from his doctor, Bob and wife Marie began to explore NZ. From Northland to Bluff, the authors visited 1,000 in under 4 years. They had a small beer in each, took a photo, and recorded stories told to them by publicans or customers. They admit to not being professional photographers, but their camera lovingly recorded every pub they visited. They travelled roads some of us have never heard of, and have seen more of New Zealand in four years than most of us will see in a lifetime.

"An intriguing, hilariously funny and quintessential crawl around 50 of New Zealand's tried and true Kiwi pubs. 'There's a totem pole at the Mussel Inn. It stands as a sentinel monument warning incoming visitors that they're in a different world; a world without insistent notifications, instant access and where if someone wants you, they'll just have to wait. It is quite literally a telephone pole, a pole that has mobile phones nailed to it. The outside world be warned- leave your phone in the car and come inside for a beer, you silly bugger.' From Whangamomona to Tolaga Bay, the Puhoi to the South Seas Hotel, this is a collection of stories about the pubs we hold dear, those bastions of community, the good old Kiwi pub. Featuring pubs from- Waipu, Kaihu, Russell, Hamilton, Mount Maunganui, Thames, East Cape, Tolaga Bay, Katikati, Rotorua, Napier, Gladstone, Lake Ferry, Wellington, Motueka, Onekaka, Moutere, Christchurch, Waihao, Dunedin, Winton, Invercargill, Stewart Island, Arrowtown, Blackball, Hurunui and Nelson."

The traditional Kiwi pub - the watering hole equivalent of the corner dairy - is being replaced by wine and themed bars, restaurants and cafes. Classic Kiwi Pubs visits the hotels and pubs that were, and in some cases still are, our favourite drinking establishments. Short histories of these places, their operators and photographs that capture the essence of what made them popular, comprise each pub profile. Classic Kiwi Pubs is an armchair pub crawl that will inform and delight.

Best Girlfriends Getaways Worldwide written by Marybeth Bond and has been published by National Geographic Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-03-18 with Travel categories.

Women’s travel is a thriving niche, as our first book by travel expert Marybeth Bond amply showed. To continue serving that eager market of traveling women, National Geographic presents Best Girlfriends Getaways Worldwide. Each chapter takes off with stories of women who traveled with girlfriends to celebrate, grow, challenge themselves, or simply enjoy every moment to its fullest. They ran marathons to support favorite causes, cycled through Ireland, volunteered in Montana, overnighted at a French chateau. One woman recounts how she broke through her culinary comfort zone, telling behind-the-scenes stories of a weeklong cooking class in Tuscany. An altruistic adventurer describes her life-affirming volunteer vacation with a close friend, delivering books to schools in rural Nepal. The information-packed chapters suggest once-in-a-lifetime exotic escapes, trips to the world’s best cities, cultural hot spots, places to learn and stretch your mind, canal and river trips, and great culinary getaways. Each concludes with a targeted how-to section featuring websites and contact information to help readers set off on their own adventures. Female baby boomers are not going quietly over the hill—they are roaring along the roads, waterways, and paths with style and humor. This is the book to guide them.
