Loneliness, fear, vulnerability, conflict, pain--these aren't experiences we typically seek out. And yet we all encounter them during our lives. Do you embrace these times, or do you raise your defenses, determined not to get hurt? What if it's possible to see God more clearly in the midst of these trials? In Undefended, Daniel Bush shows readers how to approach life's difficulties from a gospel-centered and grace-driven perspective, arguing that the experiences we avoid can actually bring us nearer to Christ. Drawing on examples from the Bible, history, popular culture, and the author's own life, Undefended seeks to personally acquaint readers with an experience of the inner heart, where true discovery of God takes place. Bush writes out of a deep passion for helping others find spiritual awakening, stemming from over 15 years in pastoral and counseling ministries. He guides readers through ten different experiences that can show us the authentic heart of God--if we approach him undefended.

This one-volume edition of Simon Walker's trilogy of books on 'undefended' leadership addresses leaders in all walks of life: from the home or pre-school to the corporate, academic, political or church offices. It combines the contents from his books: Leading out of Who You Are; Leading with Nothing to Lose; Leading with Everything to Give. In the first book he examines the formation of the leadership ego and shows how maintaining a front and back stage derails leaders. In the second book Simon looks at how power is used in leadership, based on eight case studies from history, and draws powerful guidelines for leaders today. In the final book he focuses on the leader's vision and examines what has caused the current failure of leadership in the West. He points out the direction in which we need to move if life is to flourish in the coming decades.

Brave, Generous, & Undefended is for all who desire freedom from confusion, self-absorption, and suffering. Rich with insight, humor, and fearless love, Barbara Du Bois’s fresh, direct heart-teachings on the timeless 37 Bodhisattva Practices encourage and guide seekers and practitioners at all levels, in any spiritual tradition. Composed in the 14th century by Tibetan teacher Tokme Zangpo, the 37 Bodhisattva Practices show clearly, and definitely, how to cultivate the expansive, freeing compassion and love that cut the tree of suffering at its root, for the benefit of others and ourselves. This is the way of the bodhisattva—one dedicated to the well-being, happiness, and liberation of all—and Brave, Generous, & Undefended is a profound teaching on living forth in ordinary life this highest of callings. The author, Barbara DuBois, a contemporary Western Dharma teacher, brings her energetic, penetrating wisdom from the heart to Tokme Zangpo’s classic text. The bodhisattva training contained in this book turn one’s self-absorption inside out, revealing the good heart that seeks ultimate freedom―for all. As a longtime practitioner, familiar with the tricks of conditioned mind and what it is hiding from, Du Bois includes and embraces us as participants in these intimate, dynamic discussions that vividly demonstrate the transformational power of the bodhisattva intention. Readers may find that arrows of love and truth pierce their illusions of self and separation, showing how, in the ever-present union of absolute and relative, we already are what we aspire to become: embodiments of truth and love. Her mind and my mind are one; whatever I know, she knows... I am asking all my friends to make sure you read this precious book. —His Eminence Garchen Triptrul Rinpoche, from the Foreword This profound yet practical book will inspire, support, guide, and invigorate beginning seekers and advanced practitioners in every tradition, as well as those without a formal spiritual focus or path. The author’s Dharma training and wisdom, together with her psychological, phenomenological, and sociological perspectives, are uniquely angled to illumine our most evident and our most hidden dilemmas and confusions―as well as the gifts we bring to the path of awakening and to all our companions on the way.

The Study of Lives reveals for the first time the extent of Henry A. Murray's considerable influence on the study of personality. Throughout his long and distinguished career, he has either trained or strongly influenced some of the world's leading psychologists, eighteen of whom have written fascinating essays for this book. The range of topics presented here is as diverse and highly original as Murray's own ideas about personality. Everyone concerned with the study of personality will find this book an excellent sampling of the best work being done in the field. "The study of lives" is a phrase Henry A. Murray has often used to describe his own work, and it suggests his central conviction that living beings must be studied as living wholes. Personality, he has repeatedly pointed out, is a dynamic process-a constantly changing configuration of thoughts, feelings, and actions occurring in a social environment and continuing throughout life. If small parts and short segments of human affairs have to be isolated for detailed scrutiny, they must still be understood as parts of a patterned organic system and as segments of a lifelong process. This has never meant for him that all research should take the form of collecting life histories, although his contributions along this line have been outstanding. It implies simply that isolating, fragmenting, and learning just a tiny bit about a lot of people tend to carry us away from what is most worth studying. The essays in this book are grouped under headings that represent some of Murray's strongest interests: His conception of personality as a dynamic process is reflected in Part I, which deals with continuities and changes in the course of life. His interest in devising procedures suitable for disclosing live feelings, fantasies, and adaptations and his insistence on the necessity for an adequate taxonomy of carefully discriminated, carefully defined variables are represented in the papers of Part II. His view that creativity is a central property of human nature has contributed to the reflections and researches that make up Part III. Finally, his concern with values--the great blind spot of traditional science but so obviously a momentous problem for contemporary lives and societies--has been taken up in several different ways by the authors of Part IV.

A systemic problem plagues the local and global church: We habitually lose the gospel. In its place, we substitute personal prosperity, legalism, politics--and we end up paralyzing the mission of the church. Galatians contains Paul's passionate defense of the gospel. It shows us how to enjoy God's presence and everlasting peace, setting us free to love and be loved. In Live in Liberty, Daniel Bush and Noel Due help you apply the spiritual message of Galatians so that you may experience the liberating presence of God.

Leadership involves power and influence over others-but each of us is trapped by a psychological imperative inside us to use whatever control we have for our own ends. Where does this imperative come from? The author describes four ego patterns, formed during our childhood, which is the source of our drives and fears-Shaping, Defining, Adapting and Defending-and shows how they determine the needs we try to meet in our lives as leaders. Our natural instinct to use our leadership to meet our own needs rather than others' is what he terms 'defendedness'. One strategy of defended leadership is to build a 'front stage' and a 'back stage', which allows us to reveal or conceal aspects of our self according to how threatening we perceive our audience to be. While the best human audiences (in secure relationships, loving marriages, deep friendships and so forth) can go some way towards fulfilling our need for unconditional and dependable approval, ultimately we need to locate a spiritual source of approval if we are to be fully available to serve others freely. With study questions and exercises, as well as leadership tools and an online community.
