This story discusses a few key events that occurred during my lifetime and the perspectives that I was able to gain from each of them. For as long as I could remember my life has been unpredictable. It's been like one roller coaster ride with every twist and turn enlightening me to the harsh and pleasant realities of life. I am often asked how I ended up where I am and how I came to be in Taiwan. I get asked about how I landed my career and how I've been able to travel so freely at such a young age. Interestingly enough I am often asked these questions by people whose lives and experiences I admire, and who encouraged me to want to do more than what I was currently doing. After observing the reactions and responses to my story each time it was told to someone new I decided it best to share my experiences with as many people as possible. There were times my own self-doubt could have prevented me from experiencing something. By relinquishing that doubt and steadily moving forward several doors were opened for me. The hope is to take what I have been able to learn from saying yes more than no, and being placed in situations where the outcome was unknown yet maintaining a positive attitude, will encourage more people to do the same.

Living with the Unexpected deals with complexity and uncertainty, two major challenges in a world faced with climate change and hazards. The study focuses on appropriate methods which enable vulnerable communities to cope effectively with natural hazards and disasters. The central goal of the book is an applicable combination of hazard management and development planning. Therefore, the reconstruction process following a disaster is understood as an opportunity for structural changes and self-organisation processes that foster sustainable development. In this context the potential of scenario planning as an evolutionary and participatory learning approach is addressed. The empirical research concentrates on the time before and during the volcanic crisis on the Caribbean Island Montserrat. Particular methods used are a systematic analysis of the complex system Montserrat, more than 200 interviews with stakeholders and citizens – concentrating on resource and hazard perceptions – as well as the organization and execution of various scenario workshops. The study shows that the opportunity to realise sustainable development on the island with the help of a participative, adaptive reconstruction process is better than ever. The population is sensitised to disasters and an uncertain future. Their preparedness to accept measures which are designed to reduce their vulnerability is high. ‘We believe that a person always stands before God, hand in hand with others, and at the same time with others before God.’ With these words the authors, theologians and therapists, alert us to the importance of understanding a person within her or his relational network (context). This context refers not only to the current relational network but also to the generations before us and the generations to come. In this way the conflicts of the past generations but also their resources, influence the people of the current generation and this in turn has an influence on the unborn generations. Family loyalty predetermines the choices we make and the priorities we set. How can family loyalty be a liberating motivation as a legacy for living with each other but also for meeting with others outside the family and even outside their own heritage and influences regarding e.g. ethnicity, culture, politics and religion/church? The aim of the contextual pastoral care approach is to develop a greater understanding between people and culture within their specific contexts and participate in restoring trust and trustworthiness within their relations. In this way God is in our midst on our journey towards fairness, trust and hope. This intergenerational dialogical approach was inspired by the work of the Hungarian /American family therapist and psychiatrist, Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy, and was later in turn inspired by scholars such as Martin Buber and Emmanuel Levinas. The Unexpected Third is used in many pastoral courses, academic, post- academic and practical, in the Netherlands and in Eastern-Europe. It is received as a meaningful contribution to Practical Theology and Pastoral care for individual counselling, family care and also for reworking certain conflicts in the parish and community.
