Canada and the United States: Differences that Count investigates why and how the United States and Canada—while so close and seemingly so similar—remain different in so many ways. In seventeen analytical yet readable chapters, leading authorities look at the American and the Canadian ways of doing things. The questions they address affect us all in ways great and small: as citizens, as students, and as policymakers. Our similarities and our differences are not always as we have assumed them to be, and this volume helps us learn from one another's experiences. The fourth edition features new chapters on taxation, revenues, and budgets; health care; banking and financial regulation; legislatures; foreign policy; prime ministers and presidents; and state-province comparisons. Every chapter has been updated to take into consideration major developments and changes since the third edition, including the economic meltdown of 2008, changing electoral outcomes, new census data, and new policy directions in both countries—especially concerning health care and the environment.

From the American Revolution to NAFTA to the Helms-Burton Act, CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES offers a current, thoughtful assessment of relations between the two countries. Despite oft-repeated platitudes about a "special relationship", the authors argue that what is striking is the great extent to which American policy toward Canada conforms to U.S. policy toward the rest of the world. 10 illustrations.

Heated debate surrounds the topic of health care in both the US and in Canada. In each country, these debates are based in some measure on perceptions about health care in their neighboring country. The perceptions held by Canadians about the US health care system, or those held by Americans about Canada, end up having significant impact on health policy makers in both countries. Health Care Policy and Opinion in the United States and Canada examines these perceptions and their effects using an extensive cross-national survey made up of two public opinion polls of over 3,500 respondents from the US and Canada. The book first develops a rigorous and detailed explanation of the factors that contribute to levels of satisfaction among Americans and Canadians with respect to their health care systems. It then attempts to study the perceptions of Canadians vis-à-vis the US health care system as well as the perception of Americans toward Canada’s health care system. The authors examine how these perceptions impact health policy makers, and show how the survey results indicate remarkable similarities in the opinions expressed by Americans and Canadians toward the problems in the health care system, heralding perhaps a measure of convergence in the future. The authors present how perceptions on health care indicate elements of convergence or divergence between the views of Canadians and Americans, and discuss how these citizen opinions should inform health care policy change in both countries in the near future. This book should generate interest in scholars of health care, public opinion, and comparative studies of social policies and public opinion.

This study is an historical overview of Indian-white relations in the United States and Canada. Despite the grim similarity of circumstances endured by most Native peoples, the trajectory and extent of changes for those living in the United States and Canada have been quite different at times. Such divergence in historical experiences has shaped the present; the challenges and opportunities for Native peoples in both countries today, while broadly comparable, also differ in some fundamental respects.

Canada and the United States explains, across fifteen diverse areas, why and how Canada and the United States are still so different. The book discusses whether or not these differences are growing, the key results of such differences, and the major challenges to be faced in each system. Focusing on institutions, political cultures, and social values, the book shows how both federal systems are extremely complex and how our institutions, cultures, and historical experiences often lead to very different outcomes. The fifth edition discusses the emergence of vital new issues, including the pandemic and its effects, climate change, energy requirements, increasing international tensions, and new trade problems. This book also reviews massive budgetary changes, new forms of protest emerging in Canada, and an ongoing political crisis in the US instigated bya former president convincing millions that the 2020 election was a hoax. Written by leading scholars in their field, Canada and the United States reveals how the two countries compare when dealing with similar problems that often spill across the border.
