Excerpt from The United States of America, Vol. 1 of 2: 1783-1830 HE story of the United States has frequently been told. It has been told in the spirit of boasting, as a marvel of local accomplishment. It has been told in the spirit of reverence, as the work of a chosen people under a special dispensation of Providence. Its glory has been ascribed now to one political party and now to another. Its success has been attributed to various statesmen and to different sections. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The United States of America, Vol. 1 of 2: A Study of the American Commonwealth, Its Natural Resources, People, Industries, Manufactures, Commerce, and Its Work in Literature, Science, Education, and Self-Government The American of to-day needs to know much concerning the present conditions of his country and the prospects of its future. Histories Of his people, statistics such as the current reports afford, and special monographs, are valuable to him who has the time to use them, but the characteristic American citizen is a very busy man, and he is often deterred from inquiries which would inform him as to the state of the commonwealth by. The amount of labor involved in the task of consulting a multitude Of books. What he needs, as the publishers of these volumes believe, is to have the America of to-day unrolled before him like a map, in order that he may survey its natural features, its achievements, and the position which it has attained among the nations. Such a presentation demands that the results of many investigations be put in convenient order, and that this work be done by writers who are recognized authorities in the various subjects. This first suggested to us the idea, that a connected view Of the political and civil transactions of our country, unmixed with military events, except so far as the latter had an influence on the former, was a. In this enlightened age, Geography has assumed a form so new and interesting, that it has become the study, as well as, the amusement of all ranks of society; the philosopher peruses with admiring attention, the details of the localities of distant climes; and the mere reader instructs as well as amuses himself in turning over the pages of a geographical performance. This science, which till very lately, bore so low a rank in the scale of intellectual attainment, has arisen by the exertions of men of genius, and the increasing commerce of the Atlantic states of Europe to a proud elevation, amid the numerous objects of scientific research; in fact, it blends itself so minutely with almost all of them, that in order to acquire a thorough knowledge of it, it is necessary to study the whole circle of the arts and sciences. Philosophy enables the geographic traveller to account for the ever varying appearances of nature which meet his wondering sight. Mathematical knowledge gives him the means of calculating with accuracy the positions and forms of the places which arrest his attention in his progress; and, with his apparatus of Astronomical instruments, whether he be in distant Inde, on the snow-capped summits of the Cordillera of the Andes, or in the frozen regions of the north, he is still able to fix the exact route which he intends to follow. Painting, or rather its twin sister, Drawing, is also an acquirement absolutely necessary for the man of research in this science, as by its assistance, he can point out to his brethren, the surprising features of those distant regions, which it is their lot to hear of, but never to see; and by this delightful art, which may well be ranked among the first of gifts to man, he can bring home to the imagination the forms of things unknown. Poetry is not without its share in assisting to give just notions of geographic details, as by its fascinating aid, the ideas which we form of distant objects are heightened and impressed on our memories; and without the fellowship of History, Geography would prove the most uninteresting of studies. But there are other branches of philosophy, which have of late given a form and stability to the pursuit of knowledge in this science, and by whose powerful co-operation the march of geographical acquisition is daily spreading over a wider and more noble field. Chemistry has within the last century, assumed a character so widely different from its ancient bounds, that the world is as it were a new region. We have become acquainted with phenomena, which were not before imagined to exist, and we can trace the causes, and consequently the effects of many of the operations of nature, which had hitherto baffled all the efforts of man. Geology, Mineralogy, and Oryctology, have also, as a consequence of the advanced state of chemical knowledge, become so universally studied, that no modern writer of travels ought to be unacquainted with, at least, their leading principles, and to render his labours very acceptable to the public, he should possess an accurate and extended knowledge of these branches of science. Zoography has a close connection with the details of Modern Geography, as without a description of the properties and forms of the various races of animals, which all-bounteous Providence has placed on the Earth, for the sustenance or the use of man, a mere outline of the features of kingdoms and states would be, though not useless, yet uninteresting. Botany also takes an active part in the formation of works of this nature, and perhaps, no other science has a more pleasing share in such undertakings, for every day, and almost every hour, discloses to the phytologist some new and singular variety of Natureʼs performance. Excerpt from The History of the Navy of the United States of America, Vol. 1 of 2 While biographies of naval men are usually replete with interest, on account of the hazards and stirring incidents of the sea, few general records of nautical events have been found to attract attention, beyond the value that is attached to naked facts. If such has been the case with most of the histories of even the marine of Great Britain, a service that admits of the unity and interest that belong to the operations of fleets, still more may it be looked for in the records of the isolated and simpler incidents of a navy like that of the United States. The difficulty of overcoming this great obstacle has been foreseen from the commencement of this work, and some attempts, that are connected with the arrangements of the subject, have been made to obviate it. The writer is far from flattering himself with entire success, for a history of detached combats is, in truth, a series of episodes, the mind scarcely becoming concentrated on one, when it is required to give its attention to another, while the connecting materials, according to the ordinary practice, are merely a dry detail of documents. Excerpt from The Pictorial History of the United States of America, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Discovery by the Northmen in the Tenth Century to the Present Time It would be ungrateful in me not to avail myself of the present opportunity of acknowledging the aid which I have derived from my literary friends in preparing this work. Every library to which I have desired access has been freely thrown open to me; and from the invaluable collection of original historical portraits in the Phila delphia Museum, Mr. Croome has been permitted, by a vote of the directors, to take such copies as were thought appropriate to the design of the work. From the families of some of the illustrious men whose names adorn the annals of the revolutionary war, I have received original documents, which throw considerable light. On the events of that momentous struggle; and from some of the surviving officers who were distinguished by their services in the more recent contest with Great Britain, I have drawn information which could have been obtained in so authentic a form from no other source. To these friends I render'my heartiest thanks: and I trust that assistance which they have so kindly rendered will without country. Excerpt from History, Formation of the Constitution, Vol. 1 of 2: United States of America Very many years have gone by since I conceived a hope of one day writing a history of the forma tion of our federal constitution. The congress of the confederation and the federal convention having sat with closed doors and under injunctions of se crecy, materials for the work lay almost exclusively in manuscripts widely dispersed. I have visited the archives of more than half the thirteen states, and have never neglected an opportunity of taking copies of papers relating to the subject wherever I could find them.
