Robust university–industry partnerships are vital to achieve the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and create a better world for everyone. Developing the theory and practice of the ‘5th Generation University’, this book shows how cross-sector collaboration and innovation are crucial to maximising the societal benefits of research, education and knowledge exchange, while also driving economic growth and productivity. The authors bring extensive experience in working at the interface between academia, industry and government to demonstrate how universities can effectively combine transdisciplinary programmatic activities and strategic corporate philanthropy. Competitive strategies and higher education-industry collaboration policies are playing a vital role in fostering the reputation and international rankings of higher education institutions. The positive impact of these policies may best be observed in the economic and social outputs of many countries such as the USA, Singapore, South Korea, and European Union (EU) countries such as Belgium, Germany, France, and the Netherlands. However, the number of academic publications that specifically concentrate on the impact of these policies on higher education institutions and authorities remains relatively limited. University-Industry Collaboration Strategies in the Digital Era is an essential research publication that provides comprehensive research on competitive strategies for higher education institutions that will allow them to forge beneficial partnerships with industries that will have a significant impact on their success. Highlighting a wide range of topics such as human resource management, network planning, and institutional structure, this book is ideal for administrators, education professionals, academicians, researchers, policymakers, and students.

Over the last several decades there has been a growing interest in Research & Development (R&D) policy. This is particularly so in advanced industrialized nations that have adopted science- and technology- based strategies for national economic competitiveness. The United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan -- the three nations that are the subjects of this book -- share this policy strategy. Each of these nations is committed to hamessing the innovations that stern from scientific and technological advance to promote national economic prosperity. Governments can influence their nation's R&D efIort in three general ways. First, they can directly fund the R&D efIort through grants, loans, appropriations, or government contracts. Second, they can provide tax and financing incentives to encourage higher levels of private sector R&D. Third, they can use their power to create inter-organizational collaborations that vastly extend and expand the nation's collective R&D efIort. University-industry collaborations are a principal type of these inter organizational R&D efIorts -- and the focus of this book.

This book discusses how academic institutions can play a principal role in companies innovation strategy. The characteristics of University-Industry collaboration are strongly related to the social aspect of the activity of collaborating agents oriented towards a common object of work. To analyze this phenomenon, the author applies one of the concepts from the “Practice-Based Approach", namely the concept of the Activity Network to understand the collaboration process of R&D activities in a Nordic (Telia) and Swiss (Swisscom) Telecom Companies developing innovative products. The author focuses on four phases of University-Industry innovation partnership building: identification, selection, formation and navigation. The study shows the interactions between individuals, the contexts in which they act and explores ways in which collaborative value co-creation is managed. This pioneering research offers new theoretical insights and managerial implications on how these dynamics influence innovation in companies. It will thus be invaluable to international scholars, researchers of R&D and innovation as well as business managers.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Pedagogy - School System, Educational and School Politics, grade: Excellent, Addis Ababa University (College of Education and Behavioral Science), course: Education Policy and Leadership, language: English, abstract: The main purpose of this paper was to explore university-industry partnership practices in Ethiopia and examine challenges since the practice began in the country. The study utilized a sequential exploratory mixed approach, drawing data from students, instructors, schools’ deans/directors of universities, industry officials and experts from federal ministries, selected using non-proportional stratified and purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected using questionnaires, semi-structures interviews, focus group discussions and document analysis. Findings indicated that the practice of university-industry partnerships is still weak, and many barriers remain that undermined its growth and potential benefits for both sectors. Limited awareness of universities and industries regarding university-industry partnership’s benefits, absence of clear and specific policies and appropriate organizational structures, and lack of resources were among the most critical challenges that undermine successful partnerships in Ethiopia. Additional challenges that negatively influenced university-industry partnership’s success include inadequate incentives for researchers and industry as they engage in partnership initiatives, absence of adequate monitoring and evaluation, and inadequate industry participation in the design of engineering education curriculum at universities. All these suggest that, in Ethiopia, the roles played by the universities, industries, and the government in enhancing university-industry partnerships were insignificant, thereby weakening the contributions such partnerships would provide to the country’s economy while at the same time creating efficient working systems in universities and industries.
