A dystopian novel that examines the issue of environmental destruction: the collapse of the natural world. There is the protagonist, an anti-hero, he has married the wrong person. The spouse, the antagonist, is a difficult and habitual fault-finder. She has been undermining his and her own sanity for years. The protagonist has a job to oversee, monitor, and manage environmental destruction that seems to be leading to catastrophe, to a cataclysm; so it is evident that his work has been dragging him down for some time. Then the dilemma that the story relates is that of a person who gets on with life as anyone might when backed up against the wall and with no reasonable way out. But there is a romantic interest that he comes across, and she is someone who is interested in improving her lot as well. The story in "The Unorthodox Ox" deals with the untangling of a personal and professional situation which when resolved will allow different parties to move on and live a little better.

The town of New Eden, peopled with hereditary oddities, has arrived at its last days. As two near-centenarian citizens prepare for their annual birthday tea, a third vows to interrupt the proceedings with a bold declaration. The Remnants cartwheels rambunctiously through the lives of wood-splitters, garment-menders, and chervil farmers, while exposing an electrical undercurrent of secrets, taboos, and unfulfilled longings. With his signature wit and wordplay, Robert Hill delivers a bittersweet gut-buster of an elegy to the collective memory of a community.

In this unorthodox autobiographical collection of essays the author invites the reader into a world of travel, teaching, education, entertainment, chess, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, despair, political intrigue, faith and Catholicism. From beginning to end the reader will find moments of laughter and sadness and, on occasion, the absurd. This is a quest and a voyage into an unknown future we all share and decide upon for better or worse, for richer or poorer. In the telling of his story the author discovers and reveals a deeper reason why numerous attempts to reach Mount Happiness are thwarted, although this is not so much a quest for happiness as a realization that what is worthwhile in life often begins with having faith in the present and the future. Such things define us all and even define nations. The author writes upon an historical canvas in describing the past, not only as it existed in his own life, but in that of England from 1500 AD onwards and to the present day. In this particular instance the context is political and religious and a conclusion presents the reader with the notion of a stark choice in the antepenultimate essay, The Miner's Son.On this journey there are also plenty of diversions along the way, from a pilgrimage in Spain to rock concerts in England, from brewery tours to punch-ups and from cliff diving competitions in Oman to coach trips in Saudi Arabia. A life - characteristic in its vicissitudes and variety - is explained, mourned and celebrated in this compelling book.

If you are a monk this book is not for you. If you’re a layman you could start your Zen experience of emptiness from a variation of Wittgenstein’s utterance about the world: “The world of Zen is both, what the world is and what the world is not”. If you also succeeded to erase the above duality you’d discover another way of knowing; you’d be able to “see” a world that lies within the real world and yet beyond discrimination – a permanent and unified universe – the Emptiness.

The history of China is a history of warfare. Wars have caused dynasties to collapse, fractured the thin fasade of national unity, and brought decades of alien occupation. But throughout Chinese history, its warfare has been guided by principles different from those that governed Europe. Chinese strategists followed the concept, first articulated by Sun-tzu in The Art of War, of qi (ch'i), or unorthodox, warfare. The concept of qi involves creating tactical imbalances in order to achieve victory against even vastly superior forces. Ralph D. Sawyer, translator of The Art of War and one of America's preeminent experts on Chinese military tactics, here offers a comprehensive guide to the ancient practice of unorthodox warfare. He describes, among many other tactics, how Chinese generals have used false rumors to exploit opposing generals' distrust of their subordinates; dressed thousands of women as soldiers to create the illusion of an elite attack force; and sent word of a false surrender to lure enemy troops away from a vital escape route. The Tao of Deception is the book that military tacticians and military historians will turn to as the definitive guide to a new, yet ancient, way of thinking about strategy.

The classic samurai novel about the real exploits of the most famous swordsman. Miyamoto Musashi was the child of an era when Japan was emerging from decades of civil strife. Lured to the great Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 by the hope of becoming a samurai—without really knowing what it meant—he regains consciousness after the battle to find himself lying defeated, dazed and wounded among thousands of the dead and dying. On his way home, he commits a rash act, becomes a fugitive and brings life in his own village to a standstill—until he is captured by a weaponless Zen monk. The lovely Otsu, seeing in Musashi her ideal of manliness, frees him from his tortuous punishment, but he is recaptured and imprisoned. During three years of solitary confinement, he delves into the classics of Japan and China. When he is set free again, he rejects the position of samurai and for the next several years pursues his goal relentlessly, looking neither to left nor to right. Ever so slowly it dawns on him that following the Way of the Sword is not simply a matter of finding a target for his brute strength. Continually striving to perfect his technique, which leads him to a unique style of fighting with two swords simultaneously, he travels far and wide, challenging fighters of many disciplines, taking nature to be his ultimate and severest teacher and undergoing the rigorous training of those who follow the Way. He is supremely successful in his encounters, but in the Art of War he perceives the way of peaceful and prosperous governance and disciplines himself to be a real human being He becomes a reluctant hero to a host of people whose lives he has touched and been touched by. And, inevitably, he has to pit his skill against the naked blade of his greatest rival. Musashi is a novel in the best tradition of Japanese story telling. It is a living story, subtle and imaginative, teeming with memorable characters, many of them historical. Interweaving themes of unrequited love, misguided revenge, filial piety and absolute dedication to the Way of the Samurai, it depicts vividly a world Westerners know only vaguely. Full of gusto and humor, it has an epic quality and universal appeal. The novel was made into a three-part movie by Director Hiroshi Inagai. For more information, visit the Shopping area
