Excerpt from The Unpopular Review, July-December 1918, Vol. 10 In this respect, the war has already rendered a distinct service to this country. No longer can we blind ourselves to the fact that national unity does not exist. Professor William Graham Sumner used often to remark that the United States had no just claim to the name of nation, because of the presence of the negroes within its borders. Whether that particular definition of nation is adopted or not, there can be no doubt that real national homogene ity is Wholly lacking, and that the negro is by no means the only discordant element. In fact, in many ways the immigration problem is more imminent and menacing than the negro problem: for the negro problem is in a sense static, since it is not aggravated by continuous accessions from without. We know what the negro prob lem is, and can state it in terms which will be relatively permanent. But the immigration problem presents con stantly changing aspects, not only because of its growing numerical proportions, but because of the diversity of its elements, and the uncertainty as to' its future de velopments. Excerpt from The Unpopular Review, July-December 1918, Vol. 10 Amid the manifold uncertainties into which the war has plunged us, one fact stands out with increased definiteness - that in our midst, and even voting on our policies, of life or death, - we have had for many years large numbers of people who at best give only a divided allegiance to this country, and at worst are devoted and violent partisans of some foreign state. The evidence of this truth has been of the most diversified character, including the destruction of warehouses, docks, and munitions factories, the burning of immense quantities of food, the manufacture of ineffective torpedoes, the attempted blowing up of war ships, and the dissemination of disease germs among children, soldiers, and cattle. The uniform object of all these activities has been the decrease of the war efficiency of the United States. The indications seem conclusive that the perpetrators have been, not special German spies or agents sent over here after our entry into the war or in anticipation of it, but among the candidates for Mr. Gerard's five thousand lamp-posts - persons who have lived in our midst for long periods, and have been accepted as belonging to us. So suddenly overwhelming has been the demonstration since the war began, and particularly since the United States entered the war, that there is great danger that the impression will become established that the war created the situation, that the danger is a war danger, and that the problem will automatically solve itself when the war is over. Excerpt from The Unpopular Review, January-June 1918, Vol. 9 It has long been the custom, and very especially with Mr. Wilson, to make diplomatic appointments among men associated with literature: in fact, the following ambassadors and ministers, present or recent, are members of the Authors' Club: Messrs. Egan (Denmark), Gerard (Germany), Hardy (Persia, Greece, Rumania and Servia, Switzerland and Spain), Hill (Germany), W. H. Page (England), T. N. Page (Italy), Penneld (Austria), Porter (France), Van Dyke (Holland), White (Germany) and Straus (Turkey). Of ambassadors to the United States, Lord Bryce and Monsieur Jusserand are also members of the Club. Of these, Messrs. Gerard, Hardy, Hill, Straus and Van Dyke happening to be at home, their fellow-members of the Club gave them a dinner on Thursday, November 1st, Professor Giddings presiding. The speeches began with the usual after dinner persiflage and perhaps a touch of diplomatic reticence, but the tone soon changed and they expressed much thought and experience regarding the attitude on the present great questions of the countries where the diplomats had served; and they were expressed as they could have been only to a very exceptionally stimulating audience. It would hardly be extravagant to call the occasion a historic one. But the speeches were very inadequately reported in the daily press, and on account of lateness, some of them were not reported at all. In consequence many of those present have thought that they should be preserved and disseminated, and we have secured the privilege of presenting them to our readers. For obvious reasons we forego our rule of contributors' anonymity until the next number. While preparing the speeches for the press, the authors have been invited to modify them freely with reference to subsequent reflections or events. Excerpt from The Unpopular Review, July-December 1917, Vol. 8 The American mind needs just such a stimulus to thinking all around every question. The freshness of its point of view is invigorating. The crying need of the weary old world is to get away from conventional viewpoints; conventional morality and conventional taste. It needs men and women who not only see things with their own eyes but do not fear to say that they have seen. We are living by habit and going to our death in as deadly a routine as if each soul was not a fresh and wonderful eternal adventure. This is interesting and very suggestive. It is really our intention to stand up for most of the "conventional morality and conventional taste." But we confess that many a "point of view" from which they have hitherto been mapped seems to us no longer tenable, and we often try to base our surveys upon new ones. Editor] Amid the avalanche of fiction tumbling down upon us, it ought to afford a refuge for some weary souls. I have read with the liveliest interest a copy of The Unpopular Review and have found, indeed, "something Different." It is bright, crisp, snappy, zesty. The only thing I don't like about it is the name. - Well, I guess Ill have to subscribe for it too. I have thoroughly enjoyed it. In an age when all the magazines of the country are running headlong in one direction, and dragging after them the people who like to have their thinking come ready-made, it is quite refreshing to meet a periodical which is distinctly different, and which has the witty flavor characteristic of the best English periodicals. ... the most virile and interesting magazine that I have ever seen. ... it would not bore me in the least to give you my impressions if I had any to give. I have no more impression of your magazine than my friend has of the girl he went to see the Sunday afternoon he discovered The Unpopular Review, but I am still waiting for the return of the magazine, and shall attempt to put aside all jealousy and give it a fair trial. It had the look of a good half-hour morsel before bed-time - and it postponed bed-time by just over three hours. Inasmuch as the copy you sent me is imprinted "No. 12" there is nothing to do (if you would have me content) but to send me Nos. I-II and to see that I get No. 13 and subsequent issues... The copy that I received had the most intelligent treatment of the suffrage question I have ever seen, just exactly as I would put it myself, if I knew how to put, and I would like all my fool sisters to be so enlightened, if that were possible. ... Hence the inadvertent failure to renew. But, God bless you, here is your $2.50 at last. I am a business person with a taste for literature, and your publication comes nearer satisfying that appetite than any other magazine I know. Can't keep house without this now. Although the date was more than a year back, the articles are of such permanent value that the magazine seemed only superficially a "back number." Excerpt from The Unpopular Review, Vol. 8 Mill or Spencer we forget which, probably both, and probably many other Wise men, have called attention to the fact that if you want to turn a scale, unless you put on the final needed trifle all you put on is wasted. That will be the case with all the blood and treasure put into this war by the losing side. The United States does not propose to be on that side. Excerpt from The Unpopular Review, Vol. 2: July December 1914 The present instance is Of Course not the only instance in human history Of the substitution Of Class criteria Of judgment for social criteria. Such manifestations Of class conscience are doubtless justified in the large economy Of human affairs; an individual must Often claim all in order to gain anything, and the same may be true Of a Class. Besides, the ultimate arbitration Of the claims Of the classes is not a matter for the rational judgment. What is sub ject to rational analysis, however, are the methods Of gaining its ends proposed by the new social conscience. Of these methods one Of wide acceptance is that Of fixing Odium upon certain property interests, with a view to depriving them immediately Of the respect still granted to property interests in general, and ultimately Of the protection Of the laws. It is with the rationality Of what may be called the excommunication and outlawing Of special property interests, that the present paper is con cerned. Excerpt from The Unpopular Review, Vol. 6: July December, 1916 Amplification of the function of what we are pleased to call The Government, is going on with startling ra pidity, until any enterprise which concerns the welfare of a considerable portion of the constituency of a body politic is liable at any time to be taken in hand by the organiza tion which directs the political affairs of that body. And however conservative we may be as regards this socialistic tendency, who is able to set any bounds beyond which he can confidently maintain that it will not, or even that it should not, in future go? The best that we can do is to see to it that the state or the municipality shall not assume new functions faster than ways are found to simplify procedure, lest in the complexity of machinery the force of public opinion be dissipated and baffled, instead of being focused and made effective.
