Whenever a drug dealer swallows drugs upon arrest, a medical practitioner administers a so-called emetic which makes the suspect vomit and which allows the Police to seize the evidence. The thesis presents the legal basis and the constituent elements of this measure. It shows how the administration of the emetic takes place, where in Germany the method occurs and to what extent it is used. The thesis further compares the German measure to obtain evidence in cases of internal concealment with the Australian one. It shows that Australia, too, encounters problems of internal concealment and how Australian authorities react to such a challenge. The thesis moves on in examining whether the administration of a vomit-inducing medicament in order to obtain evidence is compatible with International Law. It scrutinises if the use of emetics is a means of torture and thus infringes the suspect's fundamental rights of human dignity and personal integrity. The thesis comes to the conclusion that the use of emetics does not amount to torture under Article 3 of the European Convention for the Protection of Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and Article 1 (1) of the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

The World Medical Association calls on physicians to respect human dignity and to discharge their duties with dignity. And yet human dignity is a term—like love, hope, and justice—that is intuitively grasped but never clearly defined. Some ethicists and bioethicists dismiss it; other thinkers point to its use in the service of particular ideologies. The planning and writing of this book has taken rather longer than I had originally intended; what began as a modest literary project for two second-year medical students has expanded over eight years to become a complete book. The subject matter lent itself all too easily to a sen sationalist approach yet, on the other hand, a strictly scientific approach would probably have resulted in a dull dry text of little interest to the general reader. I have therefore attempted to bridge the gap and make the book intelligible and entertaining to the non-special ist, but at the same time ensuring that it is factually correct and adequately researched for the scientist or clinician. I have always been impressed by Sir J .G. Frazer's introduction to his classic book The Golden Bough in which he apologizes for the fact that an article originally intended merely to explain the rules of succession to the priesthood of Diana at Aricia had expanded, over a period of thirty years, to twelve volumes. The present work cannot pretend to such heady levels of academic excellence.

Traditional methods in the clinical practice of neurology have dominated clinical teaching in this specialty for about 100 years. Essentially these methods involve meticulous attention to detail and the recording of clinical facts. Thus the clinical history must be recorded chronologically, preferably in the patient's own words, and of the nervous sys followed by a carefully structured examination tem set out in such a way as to allow the precise localisation of the lesion or system involved. Clinical neurology taught and practised in this way has bred generations of neurologists throughout the world and raised the standards in the specialty to a level where clinical skills are probably unexcelled in any other specialty. With increasing availability and reliance upon non-invasive imaging techniques, the need for these skills in large areas of neurological practice has diminished. But perhaps more importantly, the classical clinical methods in neurology were developed when the elderly population was much smaller and when the specialty of geriatrics did not exist. As a result, much of the methodology is irrelevant or unreliable in of geriatrics will frequently the elderly population and the student find himself searching in vain in the textbooks of neurology for help in assessing an elderly patient with an atypical presentation (for example disturbance of balance or recurrent confusional episodes) of some common neurological disorder.
