This re-interpretation of Little Girl in a Blue Armchair conceives of the painting as a didactic work intentionally alluding to the genre of the female nude within the canon of Western painting. Investigation of Cassatt's Little Girl in a Blue Armchair in relation to the genre of the female nude intendeds to provoke a dialogue on interpreting the visual representation of human interactions that take place outside the picture plane as well as within. Through an analysis of Mary Cassatt's avant-garde gambit, we can understand the fluidity with which gendered spectatorship is both formulated and deconstructed--in order to expand new spaces for interpreting Little Girl in a Blue Armchair.
