“A flower is not a flower alone; a thousand thoughts invest it.” Daffodils signal new beginnings, daisies innocence. Lilacs mean the first emotions of love, periwinkles tender recollection. Early Victorians used flowers as a way to express their feelings—love or grief, jealousy or devotion. Now, modern-day romantics are enjoying a resurgence of this bygone custom, and this book will share the historical, literary, and cultural significance of flowers with a whole new generation. With lavish illustrations, a dual dictionary of flora and meanings, and suggestions for creating expressive arrangements, this keepsake is the perfect compendium for everyone who has ever given or received a bouquet.

Chrysanthemums are for condolences, rue is for regret, and rosemary is for remembrance. The Victorian language of flowers-also called floriography-emerged as a clandestinen method of communication at a time when proper etiquette discouraged open and flagrant displays of emotion. First emerging in 1819 with Charlotte de la Tour's Le langage des fleurs, this coded "language" was used widely throughout the nineteenth century in both England and America and today is synonymous with Victorian tradition and culture. Flower meanings were taken from literature, mythology, religion, medieval legend, and even the shapes of the blooms themselves. Often, florists would invent symbolism to accompany new additions to their inventory, and occasionally, flowers had different meanings depending on the location and time. Young women of high society in this era embraced the practice, sending bouquets as tokens of love or warning, wearing flowers in their hair or tucked into their gowns, and celebrating all things floral. Many of them created small arrangements of flowers, called tussie-mussies or nosegays, by combining a few blooms in a small bouquet. Worn or carried as accessories, these coded messages of affection, desire, or sorrow allowed Victorians to show their true feelings in an enigmatic and alluring display. As the era came to an end and the First World War began, the language of flowers faded in popularity. Traces of the tradition remain, however. We still use roses to convey love at weddings and on Valentine's Day, lilies for peace, and mums for condolences. The elegance and beauty of flowers have not dwindled-only our knowledge of their coded meanings. I hope this book, apart from offering a view into the history of floriography, will encourage readers to look at flowers and herbs in a new way, perhaps assigning their own meanings to the blooms that inspire them most.

Learn the language of flowers while you color and relax! Do you believe that nature speaks to us? Or rather, that nature can speak for us? The Victorians did. A yellow carnation expressed disdain while a red tulip declared love. This flower craze resulted in the publication of hundreds of floral dictionaries in the 19th century. These dictionaries have inspired The Language of Flowers Coloring Book. In the pages of this book you will find 45 high-quality coloring pages featuring individual flowers, their meanings and common colorings. You will also find a quick reference glossary of flower meanings at the back of the book. Included inside: A total of 45 high-quality realistic flower illustrations printed on single-sided pages. Meanings and common colors for each flower. 4 "tussie-mussie" illustrations. A brief history of the Victorian language of flowers. A quick reference glossary in the back of the book. The colour of the most lovingly pressed flowers fade but here, captured in watercolour and held in all their glory, are wild flowers as bright as on the day they were picked. One spring and summer in 1873, a Victorian Papa made a perfect keepsake for his children. No impressionism here, but exquisitely faithful recording and the Latin as well as the English names are duly recorded for the children's improvement. There is no academic arrangement by species or by alphabet; we see them just as they were brought triumphantly into the house each day.

Hailed by the press as a publishing phenomenon, The Country Flowers of a Victorian Lady is a classic work that will "change the way we look at flowers forever" (Mail on Sunday, London). Over the past 150 years Fanny Robinson's "Book of Memory," as she called it, has been enjoyed as a treasured heirloom by her family. Now, for the first time, her beautiful work -- arguably the most exquisite collection of Victorian flower paintings in existence -- can be appreciated by all. Fanny's exceptional book combines elegant watercolors with evocative poetry that is finely illuminated in the manner of a medieval Book of Hours. Using the symbolic Language of Flowers, she invests each flower grouping with subtle and often highly romantic meanings -- indeed, it is thought that the volume was intended as a lasting tribute to a lost lover. In her fascinating commentary on the paintings, Gill Saunders, a senior curator in the Department of Prints, Drawings and Paintings at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, explains the intriguing floral symbolism and takes the reader on a delightful journey into Fanny Robinson's leisured and cultivated world of flower, pen and brush.
